The ancient coastal farmstead that embraces Puffin's Nest amongst its stone buildings is in a setting that will take your breath away in the wind and sea air. Protected from the elements on one side and truly celebrating them on the other, this cliff top luxury cottage is unique.
Living

Once a granary and now a stylish petite bolt-hole for those who want to get away from it all, the roar of the Atlantic on the doorstep sets the scene in theatrical style. Step down into the open plan retreat, light the wood burner, and settle in for a snug evening with a film, a feast and a bottle of wine. Thick stone walls and original grain store windows give a wonderful sense of tranquility whilst the double height of the living space creates space and light.

Eating

The little kitchen is cleverly fitted at one end of the living space. Well equipped for two, tucked out of the way, waiting for you to pop baked potatoes in the Smeg stove after an adventure along the coastal path, or 'fresh from the farm' scrambled eggs in the pan for a lazy breakfast in bed.

Sleeping

Climb the spiral staircase to the driftwood bed on the mezzanine level under the eaves. Sink into the deep mattress and crisp bedding and sleep tight with your faces glowing from a day in the salty sea air down at the local cove which you may even have all to yourselves!

Bathing

After the challenge of the rugged North Devon coastal path just steps away from the cottage, have a heavenly deep soak in the freestanding roll top bath, with luxurious bubbles and atmospheric room lighting.

Garden

Your sitting outside area is around the far side of the cottage with spectacular sea views. The entrance to Puffin's Nest is to one side of the owner's courtyard garden and the family farmhouse is the other. Tucked against the sea facing side of the cottage with an open view between you and the cliff tops you have pride of place with a dedicated outside place to cuddle up under a blanket whilst watching the sun go down. A seat-with-a view is an understatement! A pathway runs from the cottage, along the edge of the fields, joining the coastal path and dipping down to Berry Beach and then up again along this dramatic coastline. All this is set within 500 acres of rolling farmland so bring your wellies, your surf boards and your walking boots - you will use them all here.

WiFi

Puffin's Nest is fully WiFi ready, so if you need to keep in touch with the outside world you can.

Parking

You can park right outside Puffin's Nest - this must be the most spectacular of parking spots with nothing but the sea in front of you - be sure to watch out for roaming chickens (and tractors) on this working family farm as you arrive.

Dog friendly

One small dog is welcome by prior arrangement. We charge £30 per dog per week or short break.

Baby friendly

Please note, Puffin's Nest isn't suitable for babies or toddlers.

History

Puffin's Nest is a converted granary in the heart of the working Blegberry farm. It is the only fortified farm in Devon - the wall built around the farmstead was there to protect it from pirate attacks from the cove just below. Whilst pirates tend not to be such a problem now the farm is steeped in wonderful history and with over 500 acres you are most welcome to roam wild and explore.

We want all our guests to be happy so you should know ...

The Nest is compact/small/bijou call it what you wish - but it has everything you need. It does not however, have a microwave, dishwasher, washing machine or tumble dryer. Heating is via the woodburner or electric heater. There is limited clothes storage available. The character of the barn has been completely retained: there's a low beam and limited height in the mezzanine bedroom. Mobile reception is variable. Whilst situated directly on the south west coast path, sadly the Nest does not have windows looking out to sea. The small garden area does have the most magnificent view to nothing but the sea! Found at the end of a mile long private farm road, the detached barn is nestled within the walled garden of the main farmhouse and is overlooked by the house.

Exploring

Hartland Point is right on the Devon/Cornwall border so you have the best of both counties to explore. We recommend nearby:

Westward Ho! for miles and miles of Blue Flag beach - excellent for surfing and kite flying. Great spectator sports - that is if you aren't joining in yourselves.

Clovelly village clinging to the steep cliffs with cobbled paths tumbling down to the harbour at the bottom (you can cheat and take a Landrover trip back up to the top) . Hartland Abbey - grand surroundings for an excellent cream tea in The Old Kitchens Tea Room.

Lundy Island - a dramatic bird watchers paradise off the coast and reached by boat from Bideford Quay.

The Tarka Trail - a wonderful cycle-way - see if you can get as far as Instow for a picnic from the renowned John's Deli to have on the beach there.

RHS Rosemoor Gardens at Torrington not just for gardening enthusiasts but a beautiful tranquil place to while away a warm sunny day.

Moran's Restaurant and Bar - fabulous Thai food also in Westward Ho!

… and not to forget Cornwall - Tintagel is a must with its legendary King Arthur's Castle towering above the sea. An English Heritage site to remember.
