An extraordinary Mogul-style house set amongst the Cotswold Hills, Sezincote dates back to 1805 and is a poetic combination of golden Cotswold stone, domes, minarets, peacock-tail windows and pavilions, surrounded by romantic gardens on a peaceful rural estate.
Unlike any other Cotswold mansions, Sezincote is based on a Mogul palace and includes an unusual combination of Hindu and Muslim details. While there is no mistaking the Indian influences on the exterior, the inside of the house is strikingly different, being based on Greek classical design.
Built by Charles Cockerell and his architect brother, Samuel Pepys Cockerell (great great nephews of the famous diarist), it is thought Sezincote is the only Mogul building still in existence in western Europe. It is even said to have influenced the design of Brighton Pavilion after dazzling the Prince Regent in 1807.
The surrounding gardens were built in the ‘Picturesque’ style of garden design, fashionable at the turn of the 19th century. Designed by artist, Thomas Daniel, to resemble to romantic Indian landscapes he painted, the peaceful gardens are a delight to wander through, filled with temples, waterfalls, tranquil pools, grottoes and an Indian bridge. More recent additions include the serpentine-edge borders, wildflower meadow, avenue of Persian quinces and the collection of roses and jasmines in the Orangery.
Tea and cake are served in the Orangery, only from May to September. The beautiful Cotswold town of Moreton-in-Marsh is close by, where you will find a fabulous selection of cafes, pubs and independent shops.
The gardens at Sezincote open January to November (afternoons only on Thursdays, Fridays and Bank Holiday Mondays). Sezincote House opens May to September (Thursday and Friday afternoons). House admission includes a timed tour ticket – arrive early to avoid disappointment. Check their website for opening times and admission charges (cash only).
