Found at the end of a meandering lane and set within a picturesque wildflower garden, Rose Cottage is the epitome of a traditional Cornish country home. With roses around the windows and birdsong in the air, this is a dreamy rural idyll that remembers days gone by. Step through the door and you'll find a peaceful haven with pretty interiors that embrace an eclectic mix of original features mixed with lovely modern touches. Close to the little fishing town of Mevagissey - just a two mile walk through the neighbouring woods - Rose Cottage is perfectly located for exploring the picturesque South Cornish coastline; from Fowey to Falmouth, this is a stunning area of Cornwall rich in places to visit.

Living

The comfortable, oak-floored sitting room is centred around an unusual, semi-circular stone chimney breast which houses a big wood burning stove, perfect for winter evenings. With a sumptuous teal-coloured velvet chaise sofa and smaller snuggler sofa - both from Loaf - you'll be tucked up and cosy in no time. Bold touches of colour with sunny yellow wall and deep blue walls, teamed with equally colourful cushions and curtains, add a joyous touch. There's a Smart TV for watching Netflix as you relax with a glass of something delicious, and a tucked-away office area if you need to catch up on work. French doors open out onto a slate paved terrace, so during warmer months a breeze can waft through, with birdsong and the scent of roses. The second sitting room is a super-cute snug with whitewashed walls and eye-catching shelving housing lots of curious. Here, there's a little wood burner, a Smart TV and a day bed piled with cushions, perfect for kids wanting a den away from the parents. Outside in the grounds you'll find a bespoke shepherd's hut complete with electricity and Wi-Fi (another great place to hide away if you have to catch up on work!). There's a sofa and armchair and a piano for tinkling the ivories, or perhaps you'd prefer to curl up with a favourite novel and soak in the blissful peace of the surrounding countryside. More relaxing space is found in the beautiful old greenhouse, where a table and chairs and a padded bench seat make the perfect place for morning coffee on breezier days.

Eating

Meals will be a real pleasure in this traditional cottage kitchen. With original slate flagstone flooring (now warmed by underfloor heating), exposed beams, wooden worktops and a Belfast sink, there's a real country feel. Cleverly mixed in for comfort and convenience is an electric Aga, separate Neff oven and hob, Smeg fridge freezer and all the modern appliances you might need, including the all-important Nespresso machine. We just love the Farrow & Ball blues used in the paintwork and the gorgeous blue tiles too. A bespoke elm dining table and benches which easily seats ten, while outside you'll find a dining table and chairs for a spot of alfresco dining.

Sleeping

There are three gorgeous bedrooms at Rose Cottage. The beautiful en suite master bedroom is just dreamy in shades of purple and grey and comes complete with a romantic roll top bath for two, airy vaulted ceiling, rustic wooden floorboards and a plush, sumptuous king size sleigh bed for long, lazy lie ins. In addition, there's a double bedroom with an antique French country cane bed, original exposed floorboards and lovely garden views, and a third bedroom with a super kingsize zip-and-link bed which can also be made into twin beds. We just love the eye-catching St Ives wallpaper in this charming room.

Bathing

The en suite to the master bedroom is a real delight: hidden behind a gently curving wall inset with bespoke stained-glass windows hides a wet room for invigorating morning showers. The family bathroom, panelled with wood, is a perfect spot for lying in bubbles and looking out through the window at the beautiful garden and verdant valley below.

Outdoor space

The beautifully planted, multi-level cottage garden was designed by Dominic Cole (landscape architect to both Heligan and the Eden Project). This is a fabulous space to relax in during warmer months, with an abundance of places to sit, lie, relax and eat. There's a breakfast terrace outside the snug complete with dining table, chairs and a parasol, while the terrace outside the sitting room has armchairs, a sofa, coffee table and two loungers for soaking up the sun. in the lower garden there's a sheltered grassy nook with another table and chairs, not forgetting the shepherd's hut and greenhouse.

Parking

There's plenty of private parking at the property. Please note that access is via a half mile unmade track which at times is steep with a sharp bend into the cottage grounds, therefore cars with very low suspension may wish to park by the letterboxes prior to the property.

Dogs

Two dogs are very welcome at Rose Cottage. Please note, there is an additional fee per dog, per week or short break.

WiFi

Rose Cottage has WiFi so if you need to stay in touch with the outside world you can. Please note there is no mobile reception here due to its glorious rural location, but calls can be made via WiFi and there is a land line in case of emergencies.

The Barley Sheaf Pub in nearby Gorran is worth a visit, as is The Crown at St Ewe for excellent pub meals and drinks, and Hidden Hut at Porthcurnick is highly recommended. Make sure to visit The Eden Project whilst there are also plenty of fabulous beaches within a 10-minute drive and beautiful walks along the coastal footpath that passes along from the yachting haven of Fowey and onwards towards Portscatho and St Mawes on the beautiful Roseland Peninsula, where you can catch a ferry over to the bustling maritime town of Falmouth.

We know how gorgeous our retreats are, but don’t just take our word for it – here’s what previous guests say about Rose Cottage at Heligan:

Rose cottage is in a beautiful and peaceful spot with two good outdoor terraces for catching the sun. There is also plenty of open space downstairs. The main bathroom is nicely finished and the owners have used quality materials. The bedrooms were pretty and the beds were comfortable.

Beautiful location and gardens.

A very pretty and comfortable Cottage in a beautiful location which was a joy to arrive to as it was so clean and the welcome gifts were much appreciated. We were 3 generations and two dogs and all of us had a wonderful holiday. Philippa McClyskey

Great house, particularly if you intend to visit the Lost Gardens. We walked along the lane to the gardens where we spent a wonderful day, then walked back to the house via the Jungle in the Gardens and out of a gate at the end which virtually came out at the Rose Cottage gate! Almost felt like our own private gardens!!

A truly beautiful cottage with the wow factor location. The decor throughout is of a very high standard and blends seamlessly with the location. A lovely 25 min walk leads you into Mevagissey. This was the perfect holiday, will definitely return.

The cottage was a gloriously quiet and isolated cwtch in the burgeoning spring valley. The only sound we could hear was the wind in the trees and cacophony of birdsong. A superb rest and retreat for the 6 of us who needed to ‘step off the world’ for a spell. Being able to walk up the track to the Lost Gardens or down the valley to Mevagissey, was a treat as using the cars, once parked, was a little hazardous! Alison, the Housekeeper is an absolute star

Outstanding location for peace and Tranquility.

Rose Cottage is a beautiful cottage in a fabulous location, feels like you have the whole valley to yourself but only a 30 minute or so lovely walk to Mevagissey. The cottage itself was really comfortable and loved cooking with the Aga and it made it lovely and warm inside the kitchen as well. We will definitely return!

It is truly beautiful, the location is superb, we've stayed twice and will book again.

The perfect retreat, ideal for a young family keen to get lost in the woods climbing trees. Alternatively, sitting out on the terrace watching the sun dip below the tree line before a, basic firepit, with glass in hand.

Delightful cottage and tranquil location. Beautiful part of Cornwall.

Beautiful, beautiful house, I wish I had the cleaners, the house is spotless.

The cottage is absolutely fantastic and the location breathtaking.

Beautiful location

Absolutely gorgeous in every way.

The welcome hamper is a lovely touch and much appreciated.

Loved our stay at the idyllic Rose Cottage and will definitely return, the cottage was spotless and very comfortable, the perfect place to completely unwind.

Stunning cottage in beautiful gardens and the only noise you can hear is the birds, in particular the resident owls. Nice and easy 30 min walk to mevagissey too. Perfect getaway for those just wishing to stay local and unwind.

We absolutely loved our stay! Rose cottage is like a fairytale with the most amazing, secluded gardens and beautiful interior. The location was exactly what we were looking for to really relax, yet just a gorgeous walk through the forest to the harbour. We would definitely go back!

A comfortable cottage in a lovely quiet location. We enjoyed the several places around the grounds for sitting and playing. Good to be able to leave the car and walk to the wonderful farm shop by Heligan and into Mevergessy village.
