Overlooking Lydford Gorge and River with a large garden complete with hot tub, Whitelady House sleeps 12 comfortably and oozes country house charm. A warming Aga and inglenook fireplaces with roaring wood burners await, perfect to welcome you after a day of exploring. This luxury homestay is perfectly situated to embark on countryside exploits yet near enough the south coast to have days on the beach too.
Warm and welcoming, the unique Whitelady House is packed with character. Just as you'd expect in a Devon country home, there are two wood-burners set in deep inglenooks, oak beams, exposed stonework, slate floors and two staircases. Two living rooms mean there is plenty of space for everyone, one has a Wii console to keep little (or big ones!) entertained and both have big squashy sofas to snuggle up on. The main turned oak staircase in the entrance hall is magnificent and leads up to five of the bedrooms above. There is a second staircase too where staff in bygone days ran up and down at the beck and call of their masters. The Owner doesn't go quite that far! There is table tennis in the barn and croquet for summer evenings on the lawn, so start practicing your swing for that perfect quadruple peel or pseudo cannon shot.
Here lies the treat, you can opt for self-catering or fully catered. If you are self-catering then a list of the best local suppliers will be provided and the Owner will collect any shopping ordered in advance, unpack it and put it away to await your arrival.
For those aspiring MasterChefs the kitchen is a dream - a double Belfast sink, an Aga, an induction hob and two ovens, one conventional and a steam oven plus a microwave all await so raid the cookery books. The kitchen is huge and decked out with granite worktops, the large island in the middle of the room is just right for an informal breakfast for the early risers and the dining room is just perfect - a long dining table with room for all where no doubt you will linger over the cheese and port at the end of a fantastic dinner. In addition, there is the option of having delicious home-made meals prepared and delivered to Whitelady House for you to pop in the oven at your convenience or if you fancy spoiling yourself for the evening or are celebrating a special occasion the owner offers to come in cook, serve and clear away for you, providing good quality home cooked food. For a really special treat a local celebrity chef with years of Michelin starred experience will cook a gourmet meal leaving you time to relax and enjoy the company of your friends or family.
For the ultimate relaxing break, you can opt for fully catered meaning you can enjoy a totally stress free weekend or mid-week break. Fully catered means meals are cooked and served to your party, all meals chosen in advance from delicious menus and made with locally sourced produce wherever possible. Breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner are included and if requested, a packed lunch or picnic can be provided at cost (contact us for prices).
There are six huge bedrooms, all dressed beautifully and with sumptuous linens. The master bedroom is huge, the second double has original fireplaces dressed with candles and both have modern en suite shower-rooms. The three further twin bedrooms are all individually styled and share the family sized bathroom plus there is a cloakroom downstairs. A further twin bedroom is situated on the ground floor complete with a large en suite shower-room and double doors out to the garden, ideal for any guests with limited mobility. All bedrooms look out over the garden and each room is kitted out with a TV.
Whitelady has three en suite shower-rooms, a family bathroom upstairs and a ground floor cloak-room, ideal for a large group or family.
A bubbling hot tub is tucked away behind the house and a large table and chairs on the terrace are excellent for al fresco dining. The steamer chairs are perfect for when the sun shines, and the croquet lawn is begging to be used. Stabling can be provided if you wish to bring your horse or pony, there is superb riding to be had on Dartmoor. And at the bottom of the garden is the National Trust's Lydford Gorge with its famous Whitelady Waterfall (just be careful your dog doesn't leap over the fence!).
There is plenty of private parking at Whitelady House, enough for at least eight cars.
Cycling, riding, fishing, clay pigeon shooting & shooting (in season) and even tree surfing are nearby, or for a more relaxed treat, beauty treatments can all be arranged in advance (at cost with Owner). Whitelady House is ideally located to discover and explore the whole of Dartmoor by foot, by mountain bike or on horseback: outdoor activities abound and are on your doorstep. Nearby Tavistock, voted The Daily Telegraph's Market Town of the Year, is full of independent shops and the famous Pannier Market. A little further on is the beautiful Tamar Valley, the hidden secret of Cornwall, and then on to the south coast with its quaint fishing villages, sandy beaches and Plymouth Sound. To the north is the rugged coastline at Hartland Point, and on down to Bude with its renowned surfing beaches. Further down the coast are Tintagel, Boscastle and Port Isaac. Head West and the whole of Cornwall awaits, head East across the spectacular expanse of Dartmoor and maybe visit the Cathedral City of Exeter, steeped in history and a shoppers' paradise. The choice is endless.

There are lots of excellent restaurants and pubs in the area which is fast becoming a foodie heaven.
Hotel Endsleigh in a beautiful setting overlooking the River Tamar and owned by Olga Polizzi (sister hotel to Hotel Tresanton in St Mawes) once the fishing lodge of the Dukes of Bedford, has a gorgeous restaurant.
Cornish Arm's in Tavistock is owned by John Hooker and voted 22 in the top 50 Gastro pubs in the country
Surrounded by the hills of Dartmoor, Lewtrenchard Manor offers a menu prepared by an award-winning chef.
Arundell Arms in Lifton - a hotel that does locally sourced food and can also provide fly fishing (in season) for the fisher folk amongst you.
Further afield is Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's River Cottage Canteen and Deli in the recently restored King William Yard in Plymouth.
For the ultimate treat, Gidleigh Park with its renowned chef Michael Caines, is only 18 miles away.
