Out & About

Nestled on the eastern slopes of the pretty Mendip Hills, Frome is a lovely market town full of picturesque winding lanes such as the fabulous Cheap Street - one of the best preserved medieval streets in Europe. Crammed with artisan shops, it also boasts the Frome Independent, a huge market which takes place on the first Sunday of every month from March to September and celebrates the best local food and drink as well as art and collectable items.

Voted by The Times as being one of the most fashionable places to live in the UK, this is a fabulous place to stay and with Bath, Glastonbury, the Mendip Hills and Cranborne Chase all just a short drive away, this is a great base from which to explore Somerset. Have a look through our luxury cottages in Frome and look forward to a holiday to cherish forever.

Frome prides itself as being one of the best market towns in Somerset with no less than four different markets on the go – the Frome Independent, the Frome People’s Market, the Frome Country Market and the Frome Farmers’ Market – so there’s plenty of opportunity for you to pick up delicious local goodies. Gather up some of your favourites tastes of the South West and head back to your Boutique Retreat with bundles of fresh produce, local cheese, mouth-watering pastries and bottles of Somerset cider.

If you fancy eating out, there’s something for everyone in this picturesque town, from Spanish (the High Pavement) to Thai (Thai Kitchen) to good pub grub done well (The Old Bath Arms). For a French twist in Frome, head to Bistro Lotte which offers all day dining in a relaxed setting, or for a taste of Italia head over to Castello which serves up fine Italian cuisine and really hits the spot with fantastic rustic recipes. And that’s just the start! Pulling out all the culinary stops, Frome is the perfect host with a huge array of great establishments and will leave your tongue and tum utterly delighted throughout your luxury stay.

There’s plenty of places to whet your whistle in Frome; head to the Archangel, the Artisan or the Old Bath Arms for a perfect pint or the Cordero Lounge for tapas to go with your tipple. Rich in watering holes, Frome’s streets are lined with quirky pubs and polished bars. Go for a wander to discover a hidden or gem or pull up a pew in your favourite and rub shoulders with old friends and new.

If you’re looking for something non-alcoholic, put aside some time to visit the Garden Café and make sure to try one of their delicious cakes whilst you’re there too. For tea-lovers, the Moo and Two café will go down a treat. Self-professed tea lovers, this café celebrates everything about tea and have nailed the time-consuming art of the perfect brew. Definitely worth a try!

If you can manage to tear yourself away from your luxury cottage, Frome itself is perfect for exploring, especially if you’re a lover of small, independent shops (head to Catherine Hill), historic churches and buildings, museums and markets. While away a morning, afternoon or a whole day discovering and rediscovering the narrow streets – you’ll not be disappointed.

There’s a wealth of other places to visit too – head to Bath for a spot of historic culture, more shopping and maybe even taste the spa waters. A trip to Glastonbury is always worth it; as well as a certain world-famous festival which draws huge attention, it’s a fabulous town with the Tor and Abbey to visit and plenty of interesting and alternative shops. The Mendip Hills are stunning and perfect for long, picturesque walks. Just remember to find a spot for an afternoon tea afterwards...
