A heavenly weekend at Harberton Manor

With the end of another busy week at Boutique HQ fast approaching and out-of-office notifications at the ready, we prepared to leave our working week behind and escape to the rolling Devonshire countryside – where a weekend trip to the stunning Harberton Manor would soon begin.

As 5pm arrived, we packed our luggage and set off for the sleepy village of Harberton in Totnes, where our sumptuous staycation resides. A period living dream, this historic home welcomes up to twelve lucky guests in six equally stunning bedrooms, and up to two four-legged friends are very welcome at the Manor. Promising an array of fabulous features, from a private tennis court and outdoor swimming pool, to open fires and a grand games room – this one’s for the lovers of luxury escapism.

After a few hours of travelling, we found ourselves winding along idyllic country lanes at golden hour – it’s no secret that escaping to the country is the perfect way to retreat from everyday life. Pulling into the driveaway through the grand iron gates, a sigh of wonder escaped from each one of us; before us lay our home for the weekend, a wondrously white country house awaited in true Boutique style. Beautiful stone pillars enveloped the front door, which led to a welcoming entrance hall – with a grand piano and the darling scent of winter berries from a lavish, lit candle! We were met by Harberton Manor’s caretaker, residing on-site to assist with any query we may have, who kindly offered a tour of our retreat. Wandering through our lavish getaway was simply a dream, with each room more swoon-worthy than the last – quite easily mistaken for the location of an opulent period drama. After a wonderful tour and handy tips from the caretaker, we were left to settle into our abode, with choosing our bedrooms first on the agenda.

All six bedrooms are utterly divine, each named after a flower associated with the retreat, from four-poster divans to spectacular sash windows – we were truly spellbound by the beauty of this charming manor house. After eagerly exploring the many magnificent spaces of our abode, from lovely bathrooms with inviting tubs to discovering a host of living spaces including the Snug, the Morning Room and the formal Dining Room – it felt as though we were existing in the pages of a storybook.

Gathering in the gorgeous kitchen, we were greeted by a breath-taking flower arrangement from a local florist and a welcome hamper brimming with thoughtful treats – these special touches from the owners made for a beautiful welcome to the Manor. Popping the cork of our complimentary bottle of wine and selecting a soft, evening jazz playlist on the Sonos – with a device in every room for music moments to set your staycation scene - we settled into our first night at Harberton Manor. We cherished a feast in the decadent Dining Room and then whiled away the evening in the formal Drawing Room, with the open fire lit and pillar candles flickering – the mood was set for a magical evening in our dreamy retreat.

Saturday morning, we awoke to the warm sun seeping through the curtains, and the eagerness to go and spend the day exploring our stunning surrounding areas. After we indulged in a cup of fresh coffee, and mouth-watering pastries, we set off on our adventures to Totnes, a short 10-minute drive from Harberton Manor. On arriving in the quirky town, we ventured around the local Saturday markets and our senses were awoken with the smell of fresh bread and cakes, where we eagerly chose a heavenly pastry. We pottered around the independent shops, each one different and distinctive, with much to see for every age, and a variety of local cafes, should you wish to relax and take in the historic surroundings.

Following our leisurely morning, we headed along the picturesque roads, to Blackpool Sands Beach, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Here we were mesmerised by the never-ending golden sands and sounds of the thundering waves crashing against the pebbly stones. After blowing away the cobwebs we headed back to Harberton, only to stumble upon an idyllic winery, Michael Sutton’s Cellar. We were welcomed by a complimentary glass of vintage wine, which we sipped whilst browsing through the endless selection. After much deliberation we chose a bottle of wine, to accompany our keenly awaited cheeseboard back at the Manor, which after all the walking and exploring we thought was a well-deserved treat!

Arriving back to Harberton Manor after a day full of exploring we were excited to continue living out our fairy-tale dreams - Harberton Manor is filled with total magic and beauty. Although we had spent our first night at the Manor, stepping through the grand front door for the second time, we were blown away once again with all its grandeur - yet homely - welcome. We treated ourselves to some wonderful local goodies from the welcome hamper, and with the nibbles we had bought from a local delicatessen, we curated the ultimate cheeseboard.

Spoilt for choice with which room to delight in, we decided on the Snug. Wasting no time, we lit the wood burning stove, chose a few of our favourite songs to play through the Sonos speakers, slipped back into our loungewear and indulged with cheeses and a glass of plummy wine in front of the golden fire. As the sun began to set, it shone through the door leading on to the glorious garden, coming into bloom in the spring sunshine. We spent the remainder of the afternoon relaxing and reminiscing on our magical stay so far.

Later that evening we made our way into Totnes for dinner at Ben’s Tapas, after many recommendations that we must try whilst in town. We were excited to visit! Having stumbled across Ben’s whilst exploring Totnes earlier, we knew exactly where to go. The tapas menu was delicious – small plates of tasty, wholesome food. Wishing to savour every second at our heavenly home for the weekend, we eagerly made our way back to the Manor. We climbed the grand staircase, making our way to the top floor to the fabulous games room. This part of the retreat had us feeling as though we were in our own hidden hideout, where we enjoyed an hour or two of fun and games. We then settled down on the sumptuous corner sofa together and watched a film on the wonderfully sized Smart TV. Not wanting for the night to end, as tomorrow we would be bidding farewell to this piece of paradise, we retreated to our luxurious bedrooms for another night of blissful slumber beneath the plushest of sheets...

After what felt like the dreamiest sleep we’d had in a long while, the sunlight began peeking through the curtains - which is a lovely way to start the day. This was of course followed by a cup of freshly ground coffee from the local farm shop and some warm pastries which we all enjoyed. After chatting and laughing with one another, we thought we would make the most of our last day at Harberton Manor, and what a better way to feel fresh in the morning than with a game of tennis!

After a couple games we put our wellies on and went for a lovely walk around the gardens, the flowers were starting to bloom and smelt beautiful and it was great to see a selection of vegetables growing in the allotment area – great for those who love to cook.

Our walk then continued into the village and we walked past a very quaint 13th century inn, named The Church House Inn and we continued to explore the church and surrounding area. Upon returning to Harberton Manor, we thought we all deserved a glass of wine and al fresco lunch on the patio - after all it was the weekend, so why not? Although the outdoor swimming pool was not open for our stay, this will be a truly wonderful addition for guests in the warmer months - heated between the months of late May - September.

Following a few hours relaxing in the sun-soaked garden, we sadly bid farewell to Harberton Manor and began the drive home. We can all agree that our stay in the manor was an exquisite and very comfortable one! Promising a quiet countryside setting, this is a fantastic spot to celebrate and enjoy time with your family…just perfect.
