Luxury London Living at Carmarthen House

Anna and Hannah from the BR team jet off for a staycation at Carmarthen House in London to indulge in a weekend of sightseeing in the big smoke…

Longingly waiting for Friday to arrive, we giddily discussed the weekend’s plans which were soon to begin, with a jam-packed schedule of sightseeing and indulgent foodie moments ahead of us. We started our venture to the bright lights of London, where an exciting escape to Carmarthen House awaited us for a fun-filled weekend.

Located just a few minutes’ walk from London Bridge station, we rolled our suitcases along the quaint cobbled street to be greeted by the stunning wood-clad exterior of Carmarthen House, one of our hidden Boutique City Breaks. Upon entering our abode, we were pleasantly surprised at how blissfully peaceful it was, offering quietude just moments away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The soothing interiors were simply a dream, with a chic kitchen and dining space, and a relaxing sitting area tucked away to the right. The open plan living space was perfect, with the most beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the bamboo covered courtyard garden.

The courtyard garden was a calming oasis, filled with beautiful plants and twinkling fairy lights - a hidden treasure in the heart of London. We couldn’t wait to sit out and enjoy a chilled glass of wine in the courtyard later that evening, paired with delicious treats from Borough Market… But first, to choose our bedrooms!

We took the stairs to the first floor, where we found two equally exquisite en-suite bedrooms. Both were encased in a calming pale wood, with beds swathed in luxurious linens, offering the most peaceful setting for restful slumbers. The master bedroom had floor-to-ceiling windows, with wooden blinds. Falling asleep in the sumptuous super king-sized bed at night, with the view of the illuminated tip of The Shard through the blinds (left open ever so slightly), was truly magical! The second bedroom, complete with a blissful king-sized bed was equally as stunning, with a snug window seat to sit and unwind. At the top of the stairs, there was also a cosy corner stacked high with books – perfect for moments of relaxation with one of the many page-turners available to choose from.

For the next item on the agenda, we took to Borough Market, just over half a mile from our retreat, to find some delicious treats to enjoy in the courtyard. We were spoilt for choice as we walked through the atmospheric halls and passageways, filled with a wonder of stalls selling delicious food and drink from all over the world. We carefully chose some mouth-watering delights to pair with the bottle of bubbles that we’d left chilling in the fridge, which we’d been kindly left in our gorgeous welcome hamper. We hurried back to our delightful dwelling, where we dined alfresco and savoured the warmth of dusk setting in – the perfect end to the first evening in our retreat of dreams.

As we awoke from the most restful of slumbers, we took to the vibrant Bermondsey Street, just moments from Carmarthen House. We came across the most beautiful little café, serving fresh coffee, pastries and fresh juices. We sat and watched the world go by, whilst we set about planning which tourist attractions we’d visit today. First on the list was the iconic Tower Bridge, just a 10-minute walk from the retreat. From there, we walked along the path of The Thames, taking in the great sights along the way, including the Tower of London, HMS Belfast and St Paul’s Cathedral. We couldn’t believe how close Carmarthen House was to so many popular attractions!

As the evening drew in, we made our way towards The Shard, standing tall and looking oh-so-handsome against the pink and peach hues of the setting skies. We hopped into the lift and in just moments, we were elevated to the 32nd floor. The waiters at The Shard’s restaurant, Oblix, greeted us with a smile and showed us to our table, which boasted magnificent views of the London skyline. We sipped carefully crafted cocktails whilst we waited for our meals to arrive. The burrata was sublime and the melt-in-the-mouth chocolate fondant was unforgettable! We left the restaurant with beaming smiles and full stomachs, ready for another blissful night’s sleep in our sumptuous beds at Carmarthen House.

As Sunday crept in, we welcomed the day with breakfast in bed, a morning ritual just made for weekends. On today’s agenda, we found ourselves on the South Bank of the River Thames and Westminster, gazing at the London Eye and the newly refurbished Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben). We gently strolled past Buckingham Palace and headed towards the screens of Piccadilly Circus. Another tourist attraction ticked off our list, we finished the day wandering the rooms and corridors of The National Gallery, observing the magnificent creations of the likes of Van Gogh and Monet.

Monday morning was soon upon us, and we reluctantly packed our bags to return to Boutique HQ after a magical retreat. The owners have created the most heavenly space at Carmarthen House. Every inch of this home is so calm and soothing – a perfect oasis in the centre of London with everything right on your doorstep. Experience the magic of Carmarthen House for yourself and enjoy this delightful haven in the heart of our capital.
