Slow mornings and secret gardens at Burroughs

We excitedly waited for Friday to arrive for our magical experience to begin. When we arrived at Burroughs, which is located in Virginstow, we were firstly amazed by the size of the beautifully kept gardens and outdoor space. Burroughs sleeps 8 people and welcomes two dogs, as well as having endless parking - perfect for welcoming a large group or big family stay.

I eagerly made my way through the front door to find the amazing living spaces and entertaining areas that the downstairs had to offer, including the stunning sitting room, lavish king bedroom, a cosy snug and magnificent dining area. The two separate living spaces of the lounge and the snug are perfect for families, couples, and friends to spend some quiet time enjoying the wood burners, games, watching TV or taking some time out to relax with a good book.

I walked into the kitchen and was instantly wowed. It was extraordinary, and a haven for any budding chef. Both the island and the wonderful Aga were dazzling and I couldn’t wait to use all of the fantastic equipment so thoughtfully chosen by the owners. I had the biggest smile and was overcome with a warm feeling for this ‘heart of the house’ part of the home. Hosting a family or a group of friends at Burroughs would be an absolute joy!

Skipping upstairs I was delighted with the further three beautifully decorated bedrooms, all of the beds swathed in luxurious linens and throws. The master en suite is a gorgeously verdant room which creates a calming and grounding escape. The dreamy family bathroom has both a shower and a bath, perfect for a long soak in a tub full of bubbles. The thought of my first blissful night’s sleep at Burroughs overwhelmed me, but first I headed straight to the south facing patio and garden to enjoy the late afternoon sunshine and fresh Devon country air with my family.

We were thrilled to discover the welcome pack left for us and enjoyed the complimentary wine whilst exploring the extensive outside space and the hidden area we decided to call the ‘secret garden’! I had two very excited girls who were elated to have the freedom to roam free in the sunshine. The entire garden was totally safe and secure which was reassuring for us. There is a separate dog exercising area which is well maintained, as well as an outdoor living box of blankets and cushions for maximum comfort - everything had been thought of.

Having had the most restful night’s sleep in super comfy beds we were ready for the day ahead. Our day started with a delicious breakfast made with some of the hamper products so generously provided by the owners, which we enjoyed on the patio with the morning sun shining down on us, listening to the birds tweeting and the cows mooing in the distance. Burroughs is a complete haven and a world away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and we hadn’t felt this relaxed in ages.

Burroughs is set midway between Dartmoor and the North Cornish coast, so there are plenty of destinations for you to explore. We ventured to the popular coastal town of Bude, just a 30-minute drive away with plentiful eateries, shops, castle and canal – a lovely spot to sit back and unwind with a coffee and cake. We were excited to return to Burroughs to light the BBQ with s’mores for dessert in the early evening sun. A glass of wine in hand, relaxing under a glorious sunset and twinkling fairy lights, this was the perfect end to our day.

The next morning, we decided to head to Roadford Lake which is only a five minute drive away. A wonderful spot within Wolf Valley, the 730-acre lake offers water sports such as windsurfing, sailing, canoeing, fishing, and stand-up paddle boarding. The space was abundant with footpaths, cycle trails, and a huge range of habitats to explore such as grasslands, woodlands, old pastures and orchards full of wildlife. The nature reserve is a quiet spot and has a bird hide for bird watchers. There is also a café, an ideal spot for a refreshing drink. After a delightful day in the outdoors, we headed back to our wonderful retreat to freshen up, spending the rest of the afternoon playing Cluedo and table football in front of the delightful wood burner.

We really didn’t want to leave Burroughs, we felt so happy and relaxed there and wish we could have stayed longer! The peace and quiet of the retreat and the countryside recharged our batteries and was so needed for the soul - we can highly recommend a visit to the spellbinding Burroughs. We loved it so much that we are already planning another magical adventure with our family and friends…
