This fabulous little spot can almost be missed as you walk along Falmouth’s busy main street, but look out for The Falmouth Bookseller and you’re bound to spot the 1920’s style sign and chalk boards outside the narrow entrance.

A trot up the stairs (and back in time, almost) finds you in this beaut of a tea room. Very chirpy ladies meet and greet, leading you into the stunning Georgian main room, bedecked in pale green and gold wallpaper, fab dark wood tables and what look suspiciously to be old church pew chairs. A piano (which is often played) sits in one corner. Mismatched tea sets abound, huge glass dome cake stands covetously protect gloriously sweet confections and the ‘20’s music lends a rakish feel to the place – you can almost imagine flapper types sipping on gin slings (indeed, reading a flyer informs me they’re hosting an upcoming Great Gatsby night).

During the day Dolly’s is a little more sedate, offering scrumptious cream teas plus lots of lovely savoury delights (including croques of every description, the ubiquitous crab sandwiches and their famous treacle and lavender tart). My companion and I, it being a very wet afternoon, opted for tea and cake. My ‘thunder and lightning’ cream tea (scones, cream, golden syrup – very much a Cornish thing) was delicious, as was the Assam tea I sipped. My partner in crime settled on blueberry cake (delish) and a spicy chilli chai tea (also delish). Sat in the lovely window seat, we could look out on the bedraggled passer bys, feeling somewhat smug tucked away in this gorgeous place.
In the evening Dolly’s is transformed into a candlelit gin palace, offering gin cocktails served in teapots and a great selection of tapas – I’ll be definitely heading back one evening to sample one (or four). All in all Dolly’s is a must when out and about in Falmouth – day or night.
