The Canteen at Maker Heights, Whitsand Bay

The Canteen at Maker Heights, Whitsand Bay

Hidden away on the delightful Rame Peninsula, it’s well worth getting the map out to find this out-of-the-way gem. Run by ex-River Cottage chef Nick Platt, food is rustic and delicious – think hearty stews, rib-sticking Sunday lunches, super-fresh fishy delights and gorgeous cakey goodies.

The Canteen really is a fabulous spot for a coffee, afternoon tea or a spot of lunch whist exploring this beautiful area of Cornwall. With views over Kingsand, Cawsand and the sea beyond and located just between Milbrook and Cremyll, this isn’t the easiest place to find but it’s well worth it for a really original pit stop to refuel whilst out and about on your adventures.

Located in old barracks, the long, corrugated iron buildings haven’t lost their army look but inside it’s light and airy with plenty of seating. There is plenty of outside tables too for when the weather is good – remember your sun screen and hat!

The menu is small but perfectly formed with all dishes created in the dinky family kitchen, and really good value too. The Canteen is open 7 days a week in summer until 4pm then just weekends in winter – so it’s worth booking in if you’re looking to stop for some lunch.
