Step inside this gorgeous abbey and you’ll find a peaceful space with impressive vaulted ceilings, richly-coloured stained glass windows and bags of history. The Abbey was originally built in AD 705 and has during its life been a Saxon cathedral (there are two Saxon kings buried here), a Benedictine abbey for 800 years and now a parish church. It’s had its fair share of famous worshippers too, including the Elizabethan explorer Sir Walter Raleigh.
Take a wander through the aisles and soak in the history, or maybe catch an organ rehearsal if you’re lucky. This is a lovely spot to just take a few minutes of quiet, gather your thoughts and enjoy the blissful tranquillity of such an ancient place.

There’s a small visitors shop and Abbey Trails for children to complete, such as i-spy birds, beasts, animals and heraldry. Each May there is an annual music festival too.
