Knightshayes, set in the beautiful Devonian countryside close to Tiverton, is a breathtaking and quirky National Trust country home filled with interesting features from its minstrels’ gallery, impressive ceilings, intricate carvings and even looming gargoyles! Explore the insides of this manor house, designed by architect William Burges in 1873, and discover the awe-inspiring Medieval Hall or take a peek in one of the Victorian Gothic or Edwardian Rooms. Delve into Knightshayes’ rich history and step into a servant's shoes, taking part in activities from dress up to napkin folding – experiencing life back then first-hand!
As well as its fascinating architecture, Knightshayes is also famous for its Victorian Walled Gardens which contain the flourishing Kitchen Garden. First designed by William Burges at the same time as the house, this beloved garden fell into decay during the First World War. Nowadays, since its restoration in 2003, it is green, lush, full of life and a truly beautiful sight to see. Following its Victorian roots, the garden continues to grow an array of fruit and vegetables and is now home to over 140 different tomatoes - which would have been seen as high art back in the time! Though a pretty sight-seeing spot, this garden is actually still used to produce, sell and grow crops; you can even sample some of the garden’s produce at the on-site Stables Café.
Just like its gardens, Knightshayes’ acres of parklands and countryside is still a working environment which makes it a wonderful place to see farmers tending to their stock and to spot many fine varieties of birds, trees, deer and badgers. Dogs on leads are very welcome in the parkland and there are many lovely areas to sit down, nibble on some lunch and enjoy the views – making Knightshayes the perfect day out in Devon for the entire family.
