Succeeding in striking a sometimes difficult balance, the Witchball manages to be both a true ‘local’s pub’ and also a firm favourite with visitors
Stepping into this traditional pub is a bit like stepping into another era. A stoop doorway takes you into the main area, where low ceilings and open beams nod to the floor. If you are anything over 6 foot tall, you may need to watch your step, or your head, but the pub’s lovely interior is a wonderful throwback to its yesteryears and certainly part of its charm.
Broken up into three sections, the pub has a main bar area with a wood burner that throws out warmth in the winter, a small adjoining area with pool table, and another dining area. Serving classic pub grub and lots of fresh seafood, the pub delivers hearty, warming meals and light bar snacks throughout the year.
Well-known for its selection of beers and ales, the pub also hosts an annual beer festival each summer which draws punters from far and wide. You don’t have to wait for summer though to sample a delicious selection, and there are a number of local brews you can choose from to accompany your meal. A wide range of gins, wine, soft and hot drinks are also available.
A dog-friendly pub, the Witchball is a great choice for all the family. In the summer months, the pub’s large beer garden is a veritable suntrap and great for soaking in the rays whilst tucking into one of the pub’s daily specials. In winter, the pub’s popular Sunday roasts go down a treat, and also includes vegetarian options.
If you’d like to book, you can either turn up on the day or reserve a specific table in advance over the phone. Once you’ve finished your meal, there are lots of beautiful walks a stone’s throw from the pub if you’d like to stretch your legs.
