1861 Restaurant, near Abergavenny

Run by husband and wife duo Kate and Simon King, 1861 was created out of a shared passion for food. Born and bred in Monmouthshire, Kate used her extensive experience in hospitality whilst Simon cultivated his years of experience working in some of the best kitchens in the UK, together establishing their piece de resistance.

Located in the ‘foodie’ destination of Monmouthshire, 1861 is no stranger to the scene. Having begun his career working for the Roux brothers at the 3 Michelin-starred Waterside Inn, Simon leads the way in the kitchen deftly utilising his skills. Taught the importance of quality food and provenance, he harnesses the textures and flavours of local, seasonal ingredients to create mind-blowing dishes.

Establishing strong connections with local farmers, butchers and vegetable producers, Kate and Simon emphasise reducing carbon mileage and celebrating the bountiful area. Building relationships with incredible producers equally as passionate about food as they are, love and creativity are liberally poured into every dish. Also foraging for ingredients themselves, Simon’s wild garlic risotto and elderflower fritters have become fast-favourites.

Offering a slightly more sophisticated dining experience than country pubs, 1861 still manages to maintain a relaxed atmosphere and friendly ambience. Combining high quality meals with warm, professional service, diners can turn up for a leisurely lunch or romantic evening meal. Serving a set menu, daily specials and ad hoc menus for days of celebration like Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, there is always something to look forward to.

Open for lunch between Tuesdays and Sundays and dinner between Tuesdays and Saturdays, diners are invited to show up on the day or secure a table in advance to avoid disappointment. Whether you are travelling solo or visiting with the whole gang, small and large parties can be accommodated. If you have special dietary requirements, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are also available, as well as improvised meals for kids!
