Newark Park, Wotton Under Edge

Newark Park, Wotton Under Edge

Newark Park is located in a beautifully isolated spot deep within the Cotswolds. Take a step back and time, escape modern life and enjoy all this gorgeous estate has to offer, including its breath-taking vistas over Ozleworth Valley, all the way to the stunning Mendips beyond.

Originally built in 1550 by Nicholas Poyntz, the estate flourished for over 350 years before falling into a short period of decline. However, Newark was brought back to life in the 1970s when it was carefully and thoughtfully restored. The restorations took over 30 years and once the whole house was completed it revealed an array of gorgeous period features long-forgotten. Though an impressive manor house, the estate isn’t complete without is extensive parkland and feature gardens. The garden is made up of 3 levels and some of its best highlights are the incredibly colourful seasonal borders on the south terrace, the pretty lake inhabited by lovely little ducklings and the charming historic summer house. The scenery changes with every season; witness the February snowdrops, the spring daffodils and tulips and the hue of pink cyclamens throughout Autumn.

Newark understand that flowers and historical buildings aren’t everyone’s cup of tea which is why they offer a range of garden games to keep the children busy. Hit the lawns and have a game of croquet and boules; in the summer bring a picnic and enjoy the sunshine with a variety of other families and give the chance for the little ones to make some friends – including with the resident Peacocks! And, of course, there are seasonal events for everyone to enjoy from Easter Egg Hunts to Classic Car shows! Be sure to check out the National Trust website to see what is happening at this bustling estate during your stay in Gloucestershire.

For walkers, nature-lovers and our four-legged friends, there are many walks in the 700 acres of parkland to suit everyone’s ability. The Orange route is 2 miles long and has benches throughout to rest and take in the view - very popular with families. The Purple route offers 3 miles of beautiful woodlands to explore with a steep slope to climb up to enjoy one of the best views over Ozleworth Valley. For those wanting to really get their hearts racing, take the Pink Route which takes you through the estate, on the original Georgian carriage drive around the Lower Lodge Wood.

A stately home, captivating gardens, outdoor games, unique events and utterly divine walks and scenery, there is something for everyone at Newark Park in Wotton-under-Edge.
