Visit Greenway House, once the former holiday home of renowned English writer Agatha Christie and her family. Now a National Trust property with one of only seven gardens in Britain to be recognised as a ‘Garden of Excellence’ by the International Camellia Society, this utterly divine part of the South Hams is a must-see during your luxury getaway to Devon.
Magical and frozen in time is Greenway House and Gardens. Displayed as it was intended in 1950s, you can get a glimpse into the life of Agatha Christie and experience what summer holidays and Christmases were like back then for her and her family. Explore their former holiday home and discover the memories and trinkets left behind such as its stunning library, plus Agatha Christie was not only a talented writer but an avid collector too so peruse her collection of archaeology finds, botanical china and much, much more.
As well as the impressive stately home, the gardens are a sight-to-see from its sweeping woodland towards the River Dart to the Walled Garden, home to a charming restored peach house, a lush vinery and even a pretty allotment which is tended by the local school children. There are a variety walks throughout the gardens and parkland for different ages and abilities and all perfect for enjoying the stunning scenery – one of our favourites it’s the Greenway Boathouse Walk which takes you right to the water's edge.
Throughout the year, Greenway offers a variety of events – many of them centred around books as a way of celebrating the Agatha Christie legacy. You can also take part in the Spring Flower Walks, see what theatre companies are playing in the house or even get involved and do a volunteer day! However you decide to spend your time at Greenway House and Gardens, you will be sure to create some magical memories here so be sure to pay this National Trust site a visit during your getaway to the South Hams.
