Wedmore, Somerset

Wedmore may be less famous than its neighbours Wells and Cheddar, but this historic settlement, once referred to as the ‘Isle of Wedmore’ due to its elevated position above the flood-prone Levels and nestled between the River Axe and River Brue, has a rich past and today is a bustling, characterful village.

For such a little village, it really packs a punch, like the annual ‘Turnip Prize’, a spoof of the famous Turner Prize, which celebrates hilariously bad artwork. Wedmore is also home to art festivals and opera productions, drawing people in far and wide.

There’s also an annual Real Ale Festival in September where you can sample 60 of the best ales, ciders and perrys that can be found in Somerset. And if cider is your thing, head to nearby Wilkins Cider Farm, a family-run establishment and a proper taste of Somerset offering local cheeses and more alongside their famous ciders.

And it’s not just drink Wedmore is famous for. Foodies are attracted to three excellent eateries – The George Inn that sits next to the church, The New Inn which has been serving customers for over 150 years and The Swan, whose kitchen is run by Tom Blake from River Cottage. If you’re after something a little lighter, head to the Pumpkin Delicatessen and Café whilst Nanny Ida’s is good for Sunday Lunch.

After all that, it’s probably a good idea to have a stroll so take time out to visit the Church of St Mary, dominantly positioned in the heart of the village. With parts dating back as far as the 12th century, this is a lovely church with pretty gardens, and if you can face it the climb to the top of the tower is well worth it for great views.

Fancy a little retail therapy? Wedmore is home to a surprisingly large selection of shops – especially clothes – and it’s also home to award-winning jeweller Erica Sharpe. The Village Store is also well worth a peek – inside, you’ll find a den of goodies, perfect for picking up some local supplies to take back to your retreat.
