A beach house in the truest sense, this wonderful homestay for eight is set right on the edge of the golden sands at Cawsand, on the stunning southern Cornish coast. Sleek and modern in design, this is a laid-back yet beautiful retreat, perfect for families or friends wishing to stay together, or even couples seeking extra space to spread out.

From unadulterated sea views to four en suite bedrooms, the state-of-the-art kitchen to the open-plan living space, this is a wonderful escape from the modern world, and from the moment you step inside the elevator from the private garage to take you up to your seaside abode, all of your everyday worries will be left behind.

Set in the hidden corner of south-east Cornwall, Cawsand is a pretty seaside village with plenty to do. Whether it's a daily swim (toes will be wet within a minute's stroll from the door), exploring the Rame Peninsula along the South West Coastal Path that starts behind the building, taking a ferry across to Plymouth from the beach, taking a Segway tour of Mount Edgecombe or driving along the dramatic coast road to Looe, there's plenty to see and do.

Living and eating

The beautiful open plan living, kitchen and dining area makes this astonishing retreat just perfect for get-togethers. To the front lies the sitting area, complete with Bo Concept corner sofa, two armchairs and a Samsung Frame TV with Sky Q. There's also a study nook with iMac computer, should you need to catch up on work (and if you can drag yourself away from that view!).

To the right of the living space there are bi-fold glass doors that lead out on to the balcony. As well as those incredible views, the windows let me plenty of light making this a bright, airy space. Head to the balcony and while away the hours watching the tide retreat and advance, with a glass or two of something extra special in hand.

Lying directly in front of the bi-fold doors is the fabulous dining table, the perfect spot for dinner parties and lazy lunches. During warm weather, have the windows open to let the sea breeze in, whilst in cooler weather keep cosily shut, and watch in awe as the stormy seas provide a dramatic, living backdrop to mealtimes.

At the back of the room lies the gorgeously modern kitchen, gleamingly white and fully equipped with Miele appliances such as an induction hob, electric oven, dishwasher, microwave combi oven, fridge, freezer and the all-important wine cooler! There's also a Quooker instant hot water tap and the all-important Nespresso coffee machine and a breakfast bar for on-the-go snacks, or simply to sit and watch the chef at work.

In addition, there's a separate utility room which is home to a washing machine, tumble dryer and space to dry wetsuits.

Sleeping and bathing

There are four lovely bedrooms to choose from.

Take the stairs up and you'll discover the stunning en suite master bedroom with high, vaulted ceiling and huge windows with incredible sea views that'll take your breath away. For sleeping, there's a gorgeously comfy queen-size bed to fall into at the end of a busy day exploring, where you can fall asleep to the sound of the waves and wake to the sun rising over the water, to be gazed at from the comfort of your bed - bliss! In addition, there are two occasional chairs for lounging, a chest of drawers, Sonos speakers and a Samsung Frame TV and Velux windows which have remote-controlled blinds. The en suite is a fabulous shower room. A feature Jo Downes art installation completes this room which is an escape within a retreat!

The three further bedrooms can be found on the ground floor and all have underfloor heating. Lying to the front of the house with exquisite sea views is the second bedroom, also with a queen-sized bed. This has a chest of drawers, two occasional chairs, remote-controlled blinds, and a Samsung Smart TV, whilst the en suite boasts a lavishly large walk-in shower. Perfectly private, this is a wonderful spot where you can watch fishing boats pootle past in the morning whilst enjoying a wake-me-up coffee in bed.

The spacious third en suite bedroom, tucked quietly at the back, has the benefit of having a zip-and-link bed meaning it can be set up as either a super king size bed or twins. In addition, there's a chest of drawers, occasional chair, Samsung Smart TV and an en suite bathroom with shower overhead.

The fourth bedroom is super cute and perfect for little ones, with custom bunk beds and stairs linking the two. See if you can find all the secret storage built into the stairs and under the lower bed! There's a Samsung Smart TV too, complete with a PlayStation 4 and games. The en suite shower room has jack and jill doors, meaning it can be accessed from the hallway too.

All the beds come deliciously swathed in Egyptian cotton linen, hypoallergenic bedding and luxurious throws and cushions to ensure a blissful nights' sleep. All of the en suites have heated rails to ensure towels are kept warm and fluffy.

Outside space

To the front a fabulous balcony awaits, overhanging the beach below. Here you'll find a coffee table and chairs to while away a lazy afternoon, whilst to the back of the property you'll find another balcony, the perfect spot to catch the last of the evening sunshine with an aperitif in hand. Of course, you're just steps from the beach - you can have wet toes within a minute from the door - and with beach towels provided, an early morning swim is just what the doctor ordered!

Cawsand and Kingsand, just a short walk away, are often overlooked being so quietly tucked away in this hidden corner of Cornwall, but those in the know head here for the plentiful sandy beaches, stunning cliff walks and amazing eateries. Within just a few steps you can try your hand at stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking on Cawsand beach and eat at The Bay Bar and Kitchen - just downstairs! Further afield, The Canteen at Maker Heights is a must, run by an ex-River Cottage chef and a 30-minute walk away. Head to Whitsand Bay for spectacular views, epic beaches and a great selection of restaurants. Take to the South West Coastal Path and discover the beauty of the Rame Peninsula. Catch the ferry (The Weston Maid, that used to be a tender on the ocean liner Canberra) over to Plymouth from the beach for a taste of city life and the aquarium, whilst Plymouth's Royal William Yard is full of restaurants. Pop in the car and head west and discover the pretty seaside villages of Looe, Polperro and Fowey whilst the Tamar Valley is full of natural beauty and well worth a visit.

National Trust properties locally include Cotehele House, Antony and Lanhydrock; the latter featuring bike hire and a number of award-winning trails. For thrill-seekers there is Adventure Segway at Mount Edgecombe and Jet Ski Safaris out of Plymouth into The Sound.

Christmas in the village is so cosy, and New Year brings the village firework display and the famous Cawsand fancy-dress New Year's Day swim to join in - or watch in comfort from the balcony!

This wonderful dog friendly beachside home for eight in Cawsand is bright, beautiful, and has the beach on its doorstep, with eateries just moments away too!

We know how gorgeous our retreats are, but don’t just take our word for it – here’s what previous guests say about Penthouse at The Bay:

This is a gorgeous property with outstanding views in a lovely village and we went back for a second time. Cornwall is wild, wet and windy in the middle of Autumn and The Penthouse is a lovely property to hunker down in and watch the ever changing scenery in front of you. The property was lovely and clean on arrival, the underfloor heating turned on and a very generous gift of scones, jam and cream was provided along with Cornish tea, milk, cake and prosecco. November in Cawsand was quieter than May but pubs were still open and we ate some lovely food in The Bay Restaurant, The Devonport Inn and the Cross Keys Inn. I highly recommend this accommodation and the villages of Kingsand & Cawsand and yes, we would come back for a third time.

This is a very well equipped comfortable modern apartment . Beds are particularly comfortable . The Bay restaurant next door is excellent .

Beautiful, modern and spacious penthouse apartment with a view to die for! We had a very relaxing long weekend in Cawsand and were blessed with spectacular weather. The secure parking is very handy, the accommodation is equipped with all the mod cons and everything else you could need and The Bay Restaurant downstairs serves, good wine and great food. The Old Bakery in Cawsand sells very very good sourdough bread and breakfast pastries, highly recommended.

Two things I would note, there are no wardrobes, only chests of drawers for storing clothes and there is an addition of a Nespresso coffee machine in the kitchen that takes original pods. A few starter pods are supplied.

Absolutely stunning location, so clean & had everything we needed. Feel very lucky to have spent a week in such a beautiful place celebrating a family birthday. We were spoilt for views & even saw a submarine!

Absolutely fabulous property! Loved the sound of the waves, the stunning views, the ease of the underground car park facility, the bay restaurant right next door, proximity to walks… I could go on and on!

This is an absolutely incredible place to stay, the views are to die for and the design of the flat is stunning with everything you need! There is a really lovely feel to the place and it is the perfect place to go for a sea dip as people are going in all year round! Not far from stunning locations such as Rame Head and the Cliff top Cafe at Whitsand bay, definitely recommend if you want a relaxing stay with superb sunrises and sunsets from the balcony! :)

The most magical place in the UK. We have visited Cawsands since 1962 when our family moved to the Plymouth. The standard of the accommodation far exceeded any expectations and the view is unbelievable.

Accommodation is excellent & very well appointed with a superb view over Cawsands Bay, Plymouth Sound & out towards Rame Head. Lovely to watch the maritime world go by!

Simply stunning views, brilliant mod cons.

The apartment is so luxurious and is set in the most fabulous location overlooking the water. We had a fantastic weekend, thank you very much!

Fantastic view of the sea and beautiful village.

Lovely stay at the Penthouse. The accommodation was lovely - great location and plenty of space for our family of 6. Weather was fantastic too.

Lovely place and amazing location.

Beautiful location and wonderful to wake to the sound of the waves. Parking spot also a bonus in Cornwall.

The apartment was exactly as expected with stunning views and superbly decorated throughout. Such a wonderful location with plenty of pubs in the villages and fantastic takeaway from The Store. Breakfast at the Canteen is a must.

Lovely airy place, right by the seashore - but don’t tell anyone!

It’s a lovely Penthouse in a fab location.

An amazing place, the views are on another level, location is perfect... Booked for next year!

Beautiful accommodation in a great location. It has everything you need and more. Thank you.

Superb location. Wonderful hidden jewel in the beautiful Cornish towns of Cawsand and Kingsand.

The perfect location if you love small Cornish villages and going to sleep and waking to the sounds of the sea with gently crashing waves.
