This exquisite homestay in the heart of the Devonshire countryside is the perfect escape for larger families or friends looking to get away together. Surrounded by rolling countryside, this traditional cottage offers a warm welcome from the moment you step through the doors, blending contemporary comforts with the most stunning original features and traditional touches. There are four gorgeous bedrooms to choose from plus plenty of space for entertaining both inside and out, making it a year-round escape. With original slate flooring, two wood burners, countryside views (and accompanying window seats) and beamed ceilings, this is a stunning period home that's been beautifully and lovingly restored by its owner into the welcoming retreat it is today. It's dog friendly too! Situated between the wilds of Dartmoor and the gorgeous north coast, there's plenty of things to see and do, all within a relatively short distance, whilst at the same time being perfectly tucked away from everyday life.

Being such a grand home, there's plenty of space to relax at Burroughs, with a stunning sitting room, snug and lounge area in the kitchen.

The sitting room has seating for eight with two sofas and two velvet occasional chairs nestled around the flickering wood burning stove, making it the perfect spot to withdraw to at the end of a busy day. Rich blue walls and fabulous artwork add a richness to the room, whilst French doors lead out on to the main south facing front patio and garden. There's also a HD TV, perfect for catching up on your favourite box sets or films.

The snug is a perfect escape for younger ones with table football, board games and a second TV, or for those wanting a quiet space away from the rest of the house. This cosy room has a green leather Chesterfield sofa, slate floor, and a wood burner plus views over the garden.

Just wow! The incredible kitchen is just a dream to work in, whether you're a seasoned professional cook or just starting out and is equipped with everything you could possibly need to rustle up feasts. With a bold, black Heritage (Aga style) cooker at its heart, a central slate-topped island for prepping plus a breakfast bar, induction hob, combination microwave oven, integrated fridge/freezer, and dishwasher plus lots more, you're brilliantly catered for. In addition, there are two, two-seater sofas at the far end of the room next to the bi-fold doors which lead out on to the patio and then into the garden, perfectly blurring the line between the inside and outside world. We also love the orangery roof which lets in lots of light.

The stunning dining room is the oldest part of the house and features a low-beamed ceiling (6ft at its lowest), original slate floor and an original cloam oven set into the fireplace. The owners have had a rustic table made locally to seat ten, accompanied by chairs and a former church pew. Those seeking a quiet spot can nestle in the window seat overlooking the garden. Due to the wonderful history of the house, there are shallow steps at two sides of the dining room which lead from the hall and the downstairs bedroom.

In addition, there's a utility room set off of the kitchen, a perfect space for cleaning muddy paws and storing coats and boots, plus a washing machine and tumble dryer can be found here too.

Sleeping and bathing

There are four deliciously decadent bedrooms to choose from at Burroughs, three situated on the first floor and one on the ground floor.

The large master en suite bedroom sits on the first floor and is a gorgeously verdant room with a forest green feature wall, warm terracotta soft furnishings and natural woods creating a calming, grounding escape to retreat to at the end of the day. Resplendent with a super king bed, two rattan chars and a vintage pine dressing table, the room also boasts beautiful views over the garden and across the Carey Valley, complete with a window seat from which to gaze. The en suite has a huge walk in shower with beautiful green tiles.

The second bedroom has a zip-and-link bed, meaning it can either be made up as two single beds or a super king bed, offering flexible sleeping. The warm, soft clay-coloured walls exude cosiness, and the exposed wooden floorboards and original slate hearth feature creates an earthy, rustic feel. In addition, there's a built-in wardrobe and a large chest of drawers. Views are over the Carey Valley, best soaked up from the pretty window seat.

The third bedroom is a super-sweet twin room, perfect for little ones or friends. Pale blue walls create a calming room with bamboo headboards, freestanding open hanging space and a chest of drawers. This lovely room also has a window seat and soft knitted blankets to cosy up with at night.

These two bedrooms share the family bathroom which comes with bath and separate shower.

The fourth bedroom is nestled downstairs. Tucked away, this king bedroom is a great space for those seeking space away from the others. Peaceful white walls and slate floors with green highlights come together to create a modern feel, whilst luxurious velvet cushions and underfloor heating in the en suite wet room create a really snug feel.

All of the beds come swathed in luxurious linens, bedding, throws and cushions to ensure a blissful nights' sleep.

Outdoor space

The large garden, resplendent with expansive lawn, is just perfect for children, dogs and adults alike. Close to the house on the large front patio you'll find a dining set for meals alfresco plus a Weber charcoal barbeque, whilst sun loungers offer the perfect place to laze on sunny days. There's also a picnic table overlooking the rolling countryside - perfect for picnics!

There is plenty of private, off road parking.

Babies and children

Burroughs welcomes children and babies. A highchair and travel cot can be provided on request.

Two dogs are most welcome at Burroughs. We charge £35 per dog per week or short break. Dog towels are provided.

Burroughs uses a 4G router as due to the location the wired connection is poor, so if you need to stay in touch with the outside world, you can, but please be aware that due to its delightfully rural location it can be quite slow and patchy at times.

Walking Trails in Devon

From moor to sea, there are countless walking trails in Devon that lead you mile by mile through some of the most beautiful scenery in the UK.

We know how gorgeous our retreats are, but don’t just take our word for it – here’s what previous guests say about Burroughs:

Very comfortable modernised farmhouse in a remote location. Dartmoor and the north Devon coast in easy reach for walking, swimming and surfing. Plenty of good food options available from farm shops to Waitrose/ Tesco, plus good Pizza in Tavistock or fine dining at Lifton. A really comfortable house that had lots of space for our party of 6.

Wow! We were firstly amazed by the size of the beautifully kept gardens and outdoor space, as well as having endless parking - perfect for welcoming a large group or big family stay. Amazing living spaces and entertaining areas too! The kitchen has a real ‘heart of the house’ feel. We were thrilled to discover the welcome pack left for us and enjoyed the complimentary wine whilst exploring the extensive outside space and the hidden area we decided to call the ‘secret garden’! The entire garden was totally safe and secure which was reassuring for us. There is a separate dog exercising area which is well maintained, as well as an outdoor living box of blankets and cushions for maximum comfort - everything had been thought of. Burroughs is a complete haven and a world away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, but ideally located on the Cornwall/Devon border to explore the surrounding areas. We really didn’t want to leave Burroughs, we felt so happy and relaxed there and wish we could have stayed longer! The peace and quiet of the retreat and the countryside recharged our batteries and was so needed for the soul - we can highly recommend a visit to the spellbinding Burroughs.

Lovely quiet location but great base to explore local & further afield. Full of character but modern, stylish & well equipped at the same time. Welcome hamper was a lovely touch. Cannot fault it, was a perfect week away for 3 generations of family.

A really lovely house in an excellent setting for a relaxing holiday. The birdseed was a really nice touch.

This house certainly has the ‘wow’ factor!

Excellent cottage. Very clean on arrival. Well provisioned. Fantastic large modern kitchen for family meals. Lovely garden with a large dog run: great area for exploring Devon & Cornwall.

Burroughs is marvellous. It is an absolute gem that made for a fabulously comfortable and relaxing stay. We thought it was even more glorious than the lovely pictures and were so glad we were the very first to book it! We enjoyed morning coffee at the end of the garden overlooking the countryside, evening barbecues and sitting in front of the fire with a book or movie in the evenings. The kitchen was perfectly stocked. We loved exploring the north Cornwall beaches with Sandymouth a favourite (it is worth walking an extra 500 meters down the beach for an incredibly empty beach considering bank holiday) and also went to Dartmoor for an afternoon. All in all, it exceeded our expectations for a superb stay.
