We're in love with this thatched beauty, a glorious farm stay in the heart of Dartmoor National Park in Devon for up to four lucky people.
Set on ancient farmland where short horn cattle graze in nearby fields and surrounded by the majestic wilderness of open moorland, this is the most tranquil spot for lovers of the peaceful life. Step through the door and you'll discover a home that's as welcoming as it is beautiful, a space lovingly restored by the neighbouring owners with carefully selected antique pieces, incredible artwork, and luxurious furnishings, creating a retreat that invites relaxation as soon as you arrive.
Perfectly located to explore the best of Dartmoor, there is plenty to see and do all within a short distance, whether it's taking to the moor on foot and exploring the surrounding Tors, discovering the unique natural locations such as nearby Meldon Hill, or pottering around by car and exploring the pretty villages that dot the landscape such as nearby Chagford and exquisite Widecombe-in-the-Moor.
Setting
Nearby to Middle Barn you will find Upper Barn, set ideally to cater for larger parties when booked together, whilst offering perfect privacy when the retreats are booked separately. You can view Upper Barn here or call us for more information.
Living and eating
The large, open-plan living space is just perfect for spending time together and has been beautifully restored and decorated by the owners, whose expertise in antiques and artwork can be found throughout this wonderful room.
At one end you'll find the spacious living area, complete with huge, expansive vaulted ceiling and large south facing window overlooking the garden that floods the room with soft sunlight. From here you can gaze at the ash and lime trees, and depending on what time of year you visit, the swathes of snowdrops, daffodils, bluebells, and hydrangeas that carpet the earth beneath - a natural theatre, completely unique just for you.
For cooler months, there's a stunning wood burning stove (spot the original feature alcove set behind it), whilst two sofas nestle close by and offer plenty of seating on which to curl up on, after a busy day exploring the moors. In addition, there's a Smart TV with Sky package and DVD player for film nights, plus a Sonos sound system on which to create the soundtrack to your holiday.
At the other end of the room, you'll find the kitchen, complete with teal coloured electric Aga, plenty of worktop space and all the essentials you'll need including a dishwasher, fridge, and the all-important Nespresso coffee machine. The washing machine, microwave, secondary fridge freezer and extra space can be found in the utility room on the lower ground floor.
For dining, there's a lovely wooden dining table situated close to the wood burner for cosy meals together.
Sleeping and bathing
There are two stunning bedrooms to choose from.
Take the stairs up to the master bedroom, where you'll discover a charming king-sized bed with antique, 18th century marble-topped bedside tables, a beautifully patinated wooden desk, hanging space and a chest of drawers that's also a dressing table. Gaze out of the window for gorgeous views over the rolling hills of the moors. Next to this gorgeous room lies the family bathroom, resplendent with freestanding bath and handheld shower.
The second bedroom lies on the lower ground floor and has a zip-and-link bed, meaning it can be made up as a super king-sized bed or twin beds - making it ideal for flexible sleeping arrangements. This beautiful room is a tranquil and calming space, and has bedside tables, hanging space and a large chest of drawers, plus an en suite shower room.
Both beds come swathed in luxurious linens, deep and fluffy bedding and cushions and throws, whilst the bath and shower rooms have heated towel rails.
Outdoor space
Step outside into the beautiful country cottage garden, complete with lawned area and table and chairs for meals alfresco during warmer months. Oh-so-pretty flowers bob gently in the breeze, whilst long-reaching views over the moors makes this a wonderful spot to while away an hour or two, doing little more than admiring the scenery. Original stone barns and walls line this protected spot, making it tucked away from the wind and a sunny spot for snoozing and picnicking. Keep an eye out for the natural butter well, a fascinating feature of this historic site. In addition, there's a lawned upper space for games and lounging. When the sun sets, grab a blanket and take time for star gazing, where the hoot of owls will be your soundtrack.
