The Bothy is an extraordinary retreat, a true bridge between a boutique hotel and a self-catering cottage. Perfect for couples or single travellers alike, it lies in the heart of Dartmoor close to Chagford on a beautiful estate dating back to 1840 that was once a hotel and the famous writer Mary Wesley, author of 'The Camomile Lawn' once lived here and there is reference to the house in her writing. A truly gorgeous open-plan home stay, it has been incredibly renovated by its interior designer owner to an extremely high standard, knitting together the spirit of country living with sumptuous, luxurious style.
Concierge service

From the moment you arrive to a crackling fire, chilled Champagne and generous hamper to the moment you leave, the owners of The Bothy are on hand to make your stay truly perfect. Whether you would like shopping brought in for you so you don't have to worry about buying it en route, advice on the best walks and local pubs, they're happy to help. In addition, wax country coats, wellies, binoculars, brollies and Ordnance Survey maps will be left for you. If you have any requirements, just get in touch prior to your holiday to see how they can help.

Living and sleeping

The open-plan living and sleeping space is just divine with vaulted ceiling, exposed wooden beams and Velux windows which make room beautifully bright during the day and at night offers a glimpse of the breath-taking blanket of stars above. In addition, warm oak flooring feels soft underfoot, whilst dark part-panelled walls create a striking contrast against white walls. The finishing touches are particularly special at The Bothy; we just love the antler chandelier which adds a touch of country chic, whilst the cosy linen sofa and bespoke kilim footstool is ideally positioned to snuggle up and make the most of the cosy Di Lusso wood burning stove on cooler days. In addition, there's a Smart television, Bose SoundTouch 10 sound system and a radio. The king size bed is gorgeous, set against the whitewashed exposed stone wall and bedecked in Mulberry bespoke headboard, valance and scatter cushions. Swathed in Egyptian cotton bedding and a sheepskin heated blanket, you'll enjoy a deep, restorative nights' sleep. Instead of bedside tables there are two matching Georgian chests of drawers whilst you'll find space for hanging clothes in a hidden-away wardrobe in the entrance hall. In the morning, enjoy breakfast in bed whilst gazing though the window at the jaw-dropping moorland views - we couldn't think of anything nicer!

Eating

The stylish, extraordinary kitchen is made for creating feasts. The Smeg Victoria gas hob and combination pizza oven is marvellous whilst the Belfast sink with antique brass taps, fridge with freezer compartment, full size dishwasher, Nespresso coffee machine and Dualit appliances will make cooking a pleasure. The gorgeous wooden work tops, vintage lighting, dark cupboards and shelving are beautifully eye-catching whilst the petite breakfast bar is perfect for meals tête-à-tête.

Bathing

The shower room lies next to the entance hall and has a surprisingly spacious walk in shower with a six-inch rose and a separate hand-held shower. There's a rail to keep towels warm and fluffy too.

Outdoor space

Lucky you! To the front of The Bothy lies your own private garden with extensive views over Dartmoor. Tranquil, restful and restorative, there's a summer house, Lutyens bench and table, two sun loungers and Weber barbeque to make the most of outside living, whilst there's access to a tennis court and croquet lawn (not for the professional!) whilst you can also wander to the kitchen garden for seasonal fruit, vegetables and herbs.

Farm Life

The Bothy lies next to a farm so although a very peaceful spot you will occasionally hear sheep, dogs and even donkeys as the farmer goes about his work.

Babies

The Bothy is not suitable for babies or children.

Dogs

This is one of our pet free properties.

WiFi

The Bothy has WiFi so if you need to stay in touch with the outside world you can.

There is plenty of off road, private parking.

In the Area

You couldn't ask for a more unspoilt, hidden away spot than The Bothy. Hidden away on Dartmoor at literally the end of the road, there's nothing beyond this idyllic retreat except open moorland. Surrounded by land owned by the same family for generations, this part of the countryside remains untouched so during spring you'll be treated to blankets of snowdrops and bluebells, wildlife galore during summer and autumn and the most spectacular scenery over winter months. You need do nothing more than don your walking boots and head out to explore the likes of Kestor Rock, Fernworthy Reservoir, Thornworthy Tor with its Logan Stone and Scorhill bronze age stone circle. If you do want to explore further afield, Chagford is the nearest village with great places to eat and shop as well as an open-air swimming pool. Other places of note nearby is Bovey Castle and Spa and Gidleigh Park - both wonderful places to eat and relax, whilst the Warrren House Inn is an hours' walk on a fine day. Other wonderful places of note include Becky Falls, Castle Drogo, Lydford Gorge and Wistmans Wood which are just a short drive away.
