A truly gorgeous open-plan homestay, The Bothy has been incredibly renovated by its interior designer owner to an extremely high standard, perfectly pairing the spirit of country living with sumptuous style. Promising peaceful slumbers in the king-size bed, cosy moments beside the flickering flames of the wood burning stove, and dusky evenings delighting in vast moorland vistas from the comfort of your very own shepherd's hut - discover a dreamy retreat from reality. This enchanting escape is the most heavenly sanctuary for those looking to flee the everyday in pursuit of the Dartmoor wilderness and luxury escapism.

Concierge service

From the moment you arrive to a crackling fire, chilled Champagne and generous hamper to the moment you leave, the owners of The Bothy are on hand to make your stay truly perfect. Whether you would like shopping brought in for you so you don't have to worry about buying it en route, advice on the best walks and local pubs, they're happy to help. In addition, wax country coats, wellies, binoculars, brollies and Ordnance Survey maps will be left for you. If you have any requirements, just get in touch prior to your holiday to see how they can help.

Living and sleeping

The open-plan living and sleeping space is just divine with vaulted ceiling, exposed wooden beams and Velux windows which make room beautifully bright during the day and at night offers a glimpse of the breath-taking blanket of stars above. In addition, warm oak flooring feels soft underfoot, whilst dark part-panelled walls create a striking contrast against white walls. The finishing touches are particularly special at The Bothy; we just love the antler chandelier which adds a touch of country chic, whilst the cosy linen sofa and bespoke kilim footstool is ideally positioned to snuggle up and make the most of the cosy Di Lusso wood burning stove on cooler days. In addition, there's a Smart television, Bose SoundTouch 10 sound system and a radio. The king size bed is gorgeous, set against the whitewashed exposed stone wall and bedecked in Mulberry bespoke headboard, valance and scatter cushions. Swathed in Egyptian cotton bedding and a sheepskin heated blanket, you'll enjoy a deep, restorative nights' sleep. Instead of bedside tables there are two matching Georgian chests of drawers whilst you'll find space for hanging clothes in a hidden-away wardrobe in the entrance hall. In the morning, enjoy breakfast in bed whilst gazing though the window at the jaw-dropping moorland views - we couldn't think of anything nicer!

Eating

The stylish, extraordinary kitchen is made for creating feasts. The Smeg Victoria gas hob and combination pizza oven is marvellous whilst the Belfast sink with antique brass taps, fridge with freezer compartment, full size dishwasher, Nespresso coffee machine and Dualit appliances will make cooking a pleasure. The gorgeous wooden work tops, vintage lighting, dark cupboards and shelving are beautifully eye-catching whilst the petite breakfast bar is perfect for meals tête-à-tête.

Bathing

The shower room lies next to the entance hall and has a surprisingly spacious walk in shower with a six-inch rose and a separate hand-held shower. There's a rail to keep towels warm and fluffy too.

Outdoor space

Lucky you! To the front of The Bothy lies your own private garden with extensive views over Dartmoor. Tranquil, restful and restorative, there's a summer house, Lutyens bench and table, two sun loungers and Weber barbeque to make the most of outside living, whilst there's access to a tennis court and croquet lawn (not for the professional!) whilst you can also wander to the kitchen garden for seasonal fruit, vegetables and herbs.

Spa room

To make your stay extra special, there's a spa treatment room available for massage, reflexology, facial massage, hot stone massage and deep tissue massage on Saturdays or Thursdays. This can be booked prior to your stay - please let us know and we'll put you in touch with the owner.

Bid farewell to summer in style. One of the most spectacular seasons for its food, festivals and natural finery, we can’t resist autumn in Devon.

We know how gorgeous our retreats are, but don’t just take our word for it – here’s what previous guests say about The Bothy:

The Bothy lived up to everything we imagined and more. We had a wonderful and relaxing stay. Rob and Lisa are perfect hosts. The attention to detail is off the scale. A truly memorable stay - we will be back.

It surpassed our expectations - we had an amazing stay.

Fabulous hosts who provided every creature comfort. Terrific food hamper with food from local shops, iced Cornish sparkling wine on arrival and a very warm welcome. We loved the location - amongst centuries old farms, sunrises across the Dartmoor Hills and great walks from The Bothy. Beautiful, ancient landscapes combined with the superior comfort and welcome of The Bothy made for a wonderfully luxurious and unforgettable escape.

Thank you so much for such a delightful retreat! The Bothy itself is a beautifully designed, and we picked up a few tips for our own dream home! What made it really special for us though was the generosity of your hospitality and all the details you have thought of! A heated blanket to warm up after watching the sunrise, marshmallows for roasting on the fire, the delightful shepherds hut to while away the evenings, eyemaks to encourage afternoon napping, the most wonderful food hamper that kept us going for a few days - with chocolate cereal adding to the decadence! There were incredible walking recommendations too. We had such a wonderful stay, we hope to be back again.

Thank you for making our stay so enjoyable. It was lovely to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and into the real countryside. We particularly enjoyed the recommended walk to the stone circle and back via the Tors, it was lovely in late afternoon with dusk approaching, as was the suggestion to visit The Shed in Belstone is also well worth a visit if you like a good burger.

We appreciated the home-cooked brownies on arrival and that anytime we had a question you were on hand to help out. These small touches really help to make the stay that extra bit special.

It is 7am on a Friday and we are packing our things to beat the motorway madness. What a contrast with The Bothy. A masterpiece of its kind. Beautifully designed within, nature at its finest. The hut gave me delusions of being Tommy Shelby but the temptations of limencello and marshmallow ensured the cheek bones remained hidden. Our hosts were friendly and full of informations and around if you need them and unobtrusive when it was peact and quiet sought. A fabulous retreat. Enjoy The Bothy.

Thank you so much! The Bothy has been a wonderful place for our honeymoon! It is perfect accomodation with so many nice touches, in a beautiful setting, and everything has helped to make us feel pampered, much needed after all the months of work preparing for our wedding. All the lovely food treats, the wonderful gardens (including veg from the kitchen garden!), the gorgeous shepherds hut, stunning views, and amazing collections of birds which have been so good to watch. You have both been so friendly and helpeful, with so much good advice. Just one example - the walk over the moors past the long stone and Badworthy to the North Teign - the section just below the lower bridge (made from two large stones) was perfect for bathing, even in the present droght conditions. Thank you so much.

What can we say that has not already been said! It is perfection. It was everything we expected and more. Helped of course by the spectacular weather. We will need to come back and do all of the walks we had planned. This visit was mainly spent in the garden, enjoying the tranquility and the escape from modern life. Thank you both for making our stay so memorable.

Thank you so much Lisa and Robert for the most magical time at The Bothy. We are two girls living in different cities, London and Paris, who love boutique holidaying and have picked this idyllic countryside setting to celebrate our friendly and spend quality time together. Lisa and Robert have been the most generous wonderful hosts. Love the shepherd hut, Fernworthy Forest, Fernworthy Reservoir and the gardens.

What a fantastic way to round off our tour of the South West. The attention to detail in The Bothy both in terms of the beautiful interiors and welcome hamper really blew us away as did the Shepherd Hut. We had a lovely welcome from Robert and Lisa who gave great tips and advice throughout and nothing was too much. We feel incredibly relaxed after our three days and will very much look forward to another visit in the future.

What an incredible Easter weekend! Thank you for all your amazing walking tips and pub bookings! Such a special weekend and not one we will ever forget. We would love to come and stay again.

A very. very special place

The Bothy is simply perfect! Robert was a great host, friendly and helpful and the whole weekend exceeded our expectations. We will definitely return!

We loved our holiday at the Bothy and pine for the starry night skies, clean air and cosy fires. Also one of the best hampers we’ve ever been left!!

We booked this place in hopes of a quiet, restful retreat after our wedding on the 4th September, and not only did it deliver, but it absolutely exceeded all expectations. Robert and Lisa, you have given us the romantic, peaceful and heart warming honeymoon we could ever have asked for. After the stress of planning a Covid wedding, we feel like us again. Thank you so much for allowing us to share your beautiful home. We would absolutely recommend Fernworthy Reservoir - you could easily find yourself thinking you are somewhere like Canada, and a couple of times we definitely felt a bear could've jumped out at us! Wistman's Wood was breathtakingly surreal, and our swim in the river was amazing. We enjoyed food at The Horse, Three Crowns and The Globe - all delicious and wonderful food. All in all, the most romantic place we have ever been, and definitely the best possible way for us to spend our first week and Mr and Mrs. We will 100% be back!

We had a fantastic stay at The Bothy - wonderful remote location, walks from the door and perfect weather. The Bothy exceeded expectations - such a comfortable stay, beautiful interiors, magical gardens, super friendly and helpful hosts, and so many little extra touches that we felt completely spoiled. All in all, a truly special retreat and we can’t wait to return!

Thank you Robert and Lisa for a most wonderful stay. We can only echo the other comments and agree you have thought of everything. This interior lover was quite at home in the immaculately styled bothy and crushing on your dreamy country home in its idyllic setting. We so enjoyed the shepherds hut and the ambience you have created here. Your enthusiasm for warm hospitality shines through and we felt very spoilt with all the treats. A bonus highlight is the menagerie of animals. We adore them all and made firm friends with the gorgeous pony who I'll be sad to say goodbye to. Thanks again!

Following a postponed wedding and honeymoon due to Covid, we couldn't have picked a nicer place to unwind - thank you so much Lisa and Robert. We've enjoyed the long walks, the drunken tennis, wild swimming and enjoying the spectacular views from the myriad seating areas! You've both literally thought of everything to make our stay as relaxing and memorable as possible. We will look back fondly at our time at The Bothy and hope to see you all (animals included!) again sometime.

The Bothy was a wonderful retreat made more comfortable and enjoyable by the hospitality of hosts, Robert and Lisa. We had a great week at one of the best locations in the UK! Steph and I will definitely be going back as soon as we can :) Thank you very much Robert and Lisa

Thank you from both of us, we have had the most wonderful few days. This is truly a beautiful part of the world and a chance to forget the last year. We have loved watching the nature which is a special part of Thornworthy and walking the moors. Robert and Lisa have made our stay here so very special, nothing was too much trouble and they were so kind and made you feel wanted in their lovely home. They have created special memories for us and for that we greatly thank you!

Thank you for a lovely few days - we can't believe how quickly it has gone. The Bothy has been a perfect stay - we've had everything we needed, even a little sunshine at times! Particularly enjoyed the cosiness of the shepherd's hut on a blustery evening. It's been a great location to explore all around, definitely recommend Lydford Gorge and Wistman's Woods for nice walks. Lastly, thank you for your hospitality, nothing too much trouble, especially Robert rescuing us from the reservoir - thanks!

The Bothy is a beautiful tranquil place to stay! Gorgeous grounds and accommodation. Robert and Lisa were fabulous hosts, warm, welcoming and full of great local recommendations should you want them. They put a huge amount of time and effort into ensuring their guests have the perfect break and this didn’t go unnoticed! We had such a relaxing week and can’t wait to come again.

A beautiful retreat in a perfect location. Lisa and Robert are excellent hosts - they have really thought of everything.

The Bothy was absolutely gorgeous in every way and the hosts completely charming and so helpful. We came away feeling pampered and restored and are looking forward to returning.

This was a gorgeous and beautifully decorated and styled Bothy with the added bonus of an equally gorgeous Shepherd’s Hut. The hosts could not have been more helpful lighting the wood burning stove for us in the Shepherd’s Hut on a wet afternoon and helping us with suggested walks etc. You are right on Dartmoor and there are great walls from the front door and of course the views from the Bothy and the Shepherd’s Hur are stunning.

The most beautiful setting.

Our stay at The Bothy far exceeded our expectations in every way. The location was stunning, the interiors impeccable and the welcome and service from the hosts was second to none. We felt so welcome and did not want to leave this haven of peace and tranquility, and hope to return soon. The description and images on the website do not do it justice, The Bothy has everything you could want in a holiday retreat and plenty of things you didn’t realise you needed (pizza stone in the Smeg oven!) As coast lovers we hadn’t expected to fall in love with this Dartmoor location.

Not only is the Bothy even better than described, Lisa and Robert are the most generous hosts. They have really got every little detail covered, and the location is incredible. We had the most magical weekend!

I have stayed in many rentals, some with Boutique Retreats, but this exceeded anything I have experienced before in quality and welcome.

The Shepherd's hut is the star of the show with it's cosy seating, lighting, music and of corse the wood burning stove.

This is an exquisite retreat and Lisa and Robert are the perfect hosts. We thought it would be nice- but it exceeded our expectations by far. Thank you! We will be back for more Boutique Retreats.

The Bothy is a hidden gem in a tucked away spot overlooking Dartmoor. So comfortable, both inside and out on the lawns or the shepherd's hut. Our hosts were so friendly and thoughtful - lots of lovely touches such as cream tea and sparkling English wine on arrival, soothing classic FM on the radio by the firepit. Delicious food hamper which included local produce. Walking sticks, binoculars and maps available. Great to have a tennis court on site too.

I have yet to find a more beautiful and cozy place than The Bothy to get away from it all. You'll feel spoiled.

'We have loved every moment spent at The Bothy! Your kindness, attention to detail and hospitality are second to none! What a beautiful retreat you have created here! Being able to to walk directly onto Dartmoor is very special, and made even more so by knowing you are coming back here to dry off, relax and recharge in front of the fire. We have thoroughly enjoyed being able to use the Shepherds Hut in the evenings, and last night really enjoyed the cheese and charcuterie board! We can think of no better wat to spend a 30th birthday, we hope to be back one day soon!' - May 2021

'Thank you so much for such a wonderful stay! Although we saw little sun and lots of rain, it did not matter at all since we had such a lovely home to come back to - always with the promise of a cosy fire. Thank you for having us and hopefully we will be back soon!' - May 2021

'Thank you for the most wonderful stay. We had the perfect mix of spring weather which meant we could make the most of the beautiful walks whilst snuggling up in front of the fire. Our final trek to the clappers bridge was by far our favourite and a very special place. Thank you for your outstanding hospitality, we hope to be back one day!' - April 2021

'Thank you for making our stay at The Bothy so special, from your walking tops, arranging wonderful massages in your beautiful treatment room (it really did feel like a 5 star spa!) to you kindly getting in some vegetarian food and lighting the fires for us in the evening! We really can't fault anything at The Bothy, you really have thought of everything and the little touches you've added make it all the more special. We have really enjoyed our stay and only wish we could stay longer - the whole experience has been wonderful - thank you!' - April 2021

'A gorgeous break after a long lockdown. Thank you for your walking tops and incredible hospitality - all the little touches make a huge difference. Feeling so relaxed after eating well, drinking plenty, walking in the country, a heavenly massae and a very brief and cold wild swim. Almost forgot the charcuterie - better than we could have imagined' - April 2021

'We can't express how extremely grateful we were for the amazing experience we had staying here...Thank you for sharing The Bothy and making us both feel so welcome. We have fallen in love with Dartmoor and staying here has been a BIG part of that. It's the perfect place to connect us with all of natures wonders. The experience will be everlasting. Thank you!' - April 2021

'Who knew Dartmoor in December could be so delightful? What gracious and generous hosts and I am not merely speaking of the exceptional hamper but of their help with local knowledge, with driving directions and even an errant bluetit - all freely given. Thank goodness it rained all day Sunday giving us the perfect excuse to linger longer by the fire and go no further afield than a visit to Kitty and the boys, sheep as friendly and approachable as their owners. This weekend has felt like a reward at the end of a difficult year. Thank you so much for all the attention to every detail which made our stay so special. Top tip, have Ben's Platter if you get half a chance.' - December 2020

'Super hosts, our expectations were not only met but exceeded' - October 2020

'Great hosts. Friendly and helpful. The Shepherd's hut is the star of the show with it's cosy seating, lighting, music and of course the wood burning stove' - October 2020

'Everything was perfect. Lisa and Robert are the perfect hosts and everything about our stay was exquisite. We have already recommended Boutique Retreats and The Bothy to friends- and to our dentist! Thank you! We will be back for more Boutique Retreats' - September 2020

'The host were amazing, Robert and Lisa could not have done more! What a great place to have a break, the view from the Tor. Having food and the bottle of fizz waiting for us was just wonderful' - September 2020

'The Bothy is situated in a stunning location - it's beautiful inside and outside and we had a fantastic stay. Robert and Lisa made us feel so welcome and gave us great tips on local walks and places to visit' - August 2020

'We came with a plan for the week, however given how fabulous The Bothy was and its lovely surroundings, we decided to stay locally. The owners were fabulous hosts and gave us plenty of tips - walks, eateries, and shops to buy wonderful local produce - they thought of everything. A week whizzed by and we barely went beyond ten miles - a totally relaxing and wonderful break' - August 2020

'Everything was excellent' - August 2020
