Perfectly located between Dartmoor and Totnes, this beautiful, captivating Grade II listed cottage is so pretty and charming, you'll not want to leave its peaceful embrace. From the moment you step through the door, you'll find a luxurious, welcoming, dog-friendly home stay that'll transport you away from the everyday. Beautifully decorated and totally in harmony with its heritage, The Old Smithy cleverly combines the best of the past and the present with a chic blend of vintage furniture and modern luxuries. It's also perfectly situated to make the most of Devon's coast and country, with dramatic Dartmoor and Totnes, Dartmouth, and the other coastal towns all just a short drive away. Please note, because The Old Smithy is a traditional old cottage, some of the ceilings are quite low.

The wonderful sitting room is quintessentially English country cottage with a sturdy, homely wood burner set in an inglenook fireplace at its heart, gorgeous artwork and plenty of seating nestled close by - a sublime setting for relaxed evenings. We just love the sunny, yellow velvet sofa, just begging to be sat upon! If you're in need of entertainment, there's a Smart TV with access to Netflix and Amazon Prime plus a Sonos sound system, whilst bookshelves groan with books aplenty for quiet afternoons.

Please note, The Old Smithy is a 250 year old Grade 2 listed Devon cottage, some of the ceilings are quite low and it possesses some quirks and added charm commensurate with it's age.

The exquisite, verdant green kitchen is the perfect setting for rustling up family feasts, or romantic meals 'à deux' if you're a couple. With a six-ring, double oven Smeg cooker and all the other modern appliances you could possibly need including a dishwasher, whilst open shelves beautifully display the vintage blue and white dinnerware and cocktail glasses. There's a Sonos sound system to accompany the host or hostess whilst they create culinary masterpieces!

The dining room, painted a rich, dark blue and lit by a vintage crystal chandelier, is the perfect setting for dinner parties and the Georgian dark wood table with mismatched chairs completes the look.

There are three delightful bedrooms to choose from, all totally unique in character. The master bedroom lies in the oldest part of the Grade II listed cottage and has a beautifully vaulted ceiling and a window overlooking the garden. The romantic, luxurious king size bed is beautifully lit by a chandelier whilst there's a Roberts radio and gorgeous vintage pieces to complete the look.

The second bedroom, in a striking shade of dark greeny-blue, has a completely different feel with a touch of 1930s glamour. The stunning walnut double bed, with matching bedside tables, hand blown glass bedside lights and vintage chandelier are extremely elegant whilst the blue velvet curtains and glided mirrors add a touch of decadent deliciousness.

The third bedroom, exquisitely feminine, is set up as a dressing room and bedroom. The dressing room boasts a blue velvet love seat, antique chest of drawers, freestanding mirror and a lovely window seat, perfect for whiling away an hour or two with a book. Push open the louvre doors and take the steps up to the bedroom which sits in the eaves, a little corner of heaven with a mid-century double bed and walls decorated in Sanderson's Angel Fern wallpaper.

On the first floor is a beautiful bathroom with a double-ended, roll top, freestanding bath for two, underfloor heating to keep toes toasty warm, William Morris wallpaper, heated towel rail and a window seat.

Leading off the kitchen is a shower room with a flagstone floor and a walk-in shower with overhead monsoon shower head. The laundry facilities are also housed here.

Situated to the back of the house, the large country garden comes with a dining table, chairs, parasol and a Weber kettle barbeque for alfresco dining, whilst a wooden bench half way up the garden is the perfect spot for sunsets over the Devonshire hills and a sundowner or two.

There is a cobbled parking space to the right of the cottage for a small/medium car plus further parking available a few yards away.

For foodies, head to Ben's Farm Shop (formerly Riverford Farm Shop) in the nearby village of Staverton just a five-minute drive away, whilst The Cott Inn, a short walk from the cottage, is a fab pub with log fires, live music and a sunny garden and The Almond Thief, just five minutes walk away, is a lovely artisan bakery and café.

Just up the road is the lovely town of Totnes with its alternative vibe, independent shops and sense of real history (it boasts more listed buildings than any other town in Britain). Devon's largest Good Food market takes place on the third Sunday of every month with over 50 stalls whilst a regular market occurs every Friday and Saturday. It's also lovely to take a boat trip on the River Dart from here.

If you enjoy walking, epic Dartmoor is just a short drive away and offers miles of paths, tracks and bridleways for you to explore.

Drive to the coast to enjoy the beautiful beaches of the South Hams and Torbay, all within a 30-40 minute drive.

Other places of interest nearby include Ashburton's antique shops, Staverton's steam railway and the beautiful Dartington Hall estate with great walks along the River Dart.

We've fallen in love with this quintessentially English country cottage set amongst the rolling Devonshire countryside, and we're sure you will too, with its exquisite interiors and vintage charm.

We know how gorgeous our retreats are, but don’t just take our word for it – here’s what previous guests say about The Old Smithy:

comfortable well equipped cottage and lovely bakery nearby

The locationis very good- 300m to the nearest pub which is great and does lovely food. A mile and a half walk to Totnes high street which has lot of restaurants and bars and some lovely indpendent shops.

This is our fourth! Each one different, each wonderful. We love the fact that we can be confident you will always give us a fabulous holiday. The next one already booked.

Beautifully furnished and decorated

The Old Smithy is a beautiful, comfortable chocolate-box cottage with interiors straight out of a magazine. Facilities were excellent. Our tween / teen daughters loved it too.

Beautifully furnished homely cottage. Great location for those wanting to be slightly away from the hustle and bustle of town, but close enough to everything you need for a great break. We hardly used our car, walking or catching the very well priced good bus service.

Lovely traditional cottage, beautifully decorated and extremely comfortable. The cottage is in a great location, with good facilities within walking distance, and it was also easy to access both Dartmoor and the coast. We would love to go back.

Had a comfortable stay at the cottage, it is a good base to explore South Devon.

The cottage has a small car space for small to small/medium car only. However there is here is free parking in village, just a short walk up the hill from the cottage.

The cottage has a number of very low door ways, so beware if you are very tall.

Highly recommend the Almond Thief Bakery which is a short walk away, the croissants, pastries and bread were absolutely delicious. Also the Riverford Field Kitchen is a wonderful restaurant.

We had a wonderful stay at the Old Smithy despite the terrible weather. It has been very thoughtfully decorated with good quality furnishings and still in keeping with the age of the cottage. We were so impressed with the welcome pack - lots of local produce and as an extra special touch a pumpkin was left for my daughter to carve - one very happy girl! We would not hesitate to return if we come back to Devon next year!

We have just returned from a wonderful week staying in The Old Smithy. It is a fabulous cottage, beautifully decorated and with everything you could possibly need. Wonderful log fire for cosy nights in and even a welcome basket for our dog. Its in a fabulous location to explore Dartmoor and the beautiful South Devon coastline. Also walking distance to a really welcoming local thatched pub which serves wonderful food. Local amenities in walking distance and we walked to Totnes along the River Dart.
