Step across the threshold of Burden Court and you're stepping back into history. This Grade II* listed farmhouse was once owned by Lord Chief Justice Sir Matthews Hale back in the 17th century, but today has been lovingly restored into a beautiful, luxurious home stay for eight very lucky people. With soft golden sandstone walls, underfloor heating, impressive original fireplaces, four-poster beds and free-standing baths, this is a totally blissful escape and ideal for family gatherings, friends catching up or intimate celebrations.

The beautiful drawing room with three elegant sofas is just lovely with wooden floors, cream walls and a majestic open fire; this is a room for cosying up in on winter evenings, a glass of something special in hand. We just adore the pretty sun-flooded window seats too. Additionally, there's a laid-back television room with comfy sofas, armchairs and a wood burning stove. For those who like games, there's a billiard room with a piano and a collection of bean bags - great for kids. If you're seeking a bit of peace and quiet, there are lots of hidden nooks to hide away in with a good book.

The spacious kitchen, complete with huge cream Aga, has lots of room and all the gadgets and equipment you'll need to rustle up a feast or two, including an unusual Aga fridge. We just love the island in the middle of the room, complete with breakfast bar. Additionally, there's a fabulously grand dining room with a table that easily seats ten, plus lovely garden views.

There are four delightful en suite bedrooms, each exquisitely decorated. The master bedroom, in fresh yet tranquil shades of cream and green, has a glorious four poster bed, huge stone fireplace with breath-taking country views. This was originally the 'solar' room for the owner of the house. Additionally, there's a further four poster bedroom, a double with Loaf bed and upstairs a quirky double with a kitsch retro feel - perfect for youngsters. Additionally, there's a sweet twin room set high in the eaves, perfect for little ones - this is available on request - just let us know at booking if you require this extra space. Each bedroom is swathed in luxurious Egyptian cotton linens and the softest bedding to ensure a glorious nights' sleep.

Each bedroom is en suite; the master bedroom has an incredible freestanding copper bath and separate bath, whilst the further four poster bed and double each have en suite shower rooms. The upstairs kids' room has an en suite bath and shower room with blue roll top bath - this is shared with the kid's twin room should it be used. Every bath and shower room has a heated rail to ensure towels are kept warm and fluffy.

The lovely one and a half acres of garden include a walled formal garden which take your breath away, and the countryside views beyond are just to die for. For a spot of outdoor dining, there's a table with eight chairs and a barbeque. Additionally, there's a swing and croquet for afternoon games.

In the Area

There's so much to do in the area you're really spoilt for choice. The Cotswolds, a registered Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is simply stunning and a real pleasure to explore.

Unsurprisingly for this fertile area, you'll find lots of gorgeous gardens, with Westonbirt Arboretum, Painswick Rococo Gardens and Rodmarton Manor Garden a highlight.

If you're after something a little more active, there are plenty of walks in the area - even on your doorstep. There's a fab walk from Burden Court which joins the Cotswold Way and ends at the Royal Oak in Leighterton - an ideal spot for lunch. There's also plenty of opportunities for horse riding and cycling, whilst Cotswold Water Park has 150 lakes with plenty of water sports.

If that sounds all a bit like hard work, Whatley Manor Spa is a must for a real treat.

As you would expect, there's an excellent choice of eating places too. Calcott Manor, a 14th century country house hotel, serves gorgeous food in a formal setting, whilst Quayles in Tetbury is a lovely little bistro. The Vine Tree, a firm favourite with the owners of Burden Court, is perfect for Sunday Lunch and serves an award-winning menu. Wotton Farm Shop is a must to pick up local produce to cook at home.
