Step through this gorgeous, sandstone home and you'll find a breath-takingly bright, light retreat exquisitely furnished with thoughtfully chosen antiques blended beautifully with luxurious modern touches - such as a fabulous spa room with sauna. With plenty of light-filled rooms in which to relax and unwind, this is a fabulous holiday retreat for larger families, a group of friends or even a couple wanting extra space - the ultimate luxury. Inspired by William Morris and the Arts & Crafts Movement, wallpaper and soft furnishings abound by William Morris. You'll also discover antique, original pieces of furniture by the famous Robert Mouseman. Nestled in the glorious Somerset countryside in the quintessential country village of Compton Pauncefoot, this is a great base from which to explore this stunning yet often overlooked area.

Living

There are two great spaces in which to kick back and relax; the first is the cosy sitting room with comfy yellow and grey sofa and chairs nestled around a cream wood burning stove, complete with original headmistresses armchairs, carefully restored and set by the fire, as they were at the turn of the last century. There's also a cool modern cinema with a massive navy-blue sofa to sprawl on complete with a large screen cinema TV, Sonos sound system and Netflix - great for younger family members or those wanting to hide away and watch their favourite film or box set in peace.

Eating

The truly epic kitchen is a space made for dining and entertaining. The fitted charcoal Shaker kitchen boasts a pewter Aga, wood burning stove and Robert Mouseman antique oak dining table for six, with all the essential equipment you would expect from a Boutique Retreat as well as a Nespresso coffee machine, Nutribullet and Le Creuset cookware. In addition, there's a utility room with a washing machine in the courtyard.

Sleeping

Take the stairs up, where you'll pass a collection of vintage Art Deco evening bags, to the three exquisite bedrooms; the master en suite bedroom has a king-size bed with a superb antique Moroccan carved headboard, gorgeous antique bedside and dressing tables plus views of the tree canopy outside - the rustling leaves will lull you to sleep in no time. The second bedroom has a lovely king size grey sleigh bed with a sunning antique chest of drawers and occasional chair. The third bedroom with airy vaulted ceiling has antique cast iron twin beds with custom made deep mattresses to ensure a fabulous nights' sleep. In addition, there are full-length fitted wardrobes. All the beds come complete with Brinkhaus duvets and Yves Delome linens.

Bathing

There are three bath and shower rooms; the master bedroom en suite has a shower, whilst the family bathroom has a gorgeously deep bath with overhead shower. In addition, the spa room has a separate shower. All three come with a heated rail to keep towels warm and fluffy.

Outdoor space

The pretty country garden to the front and back of the property is just where you need to be during sunny weather. There's plenty of seating plus a table and chairs in the courtyard with a charcoal barbeque for outdoor meals during the summer.

School House enjoys a quiet, rural setting, within beautiful countryside - much loved by the people who live in it. Due to its peaceful location, we kindly ask our guests to maintain the tranquil setting to respect our neighbours' peace and privacy.

We know how gorgeous our retreats are, but don’t just take our word for it – here’s what previous guests say about School House:

Lovely property. Lovely goodies including champagne were welcome.. Great property - really nice stay.

Beautiful cottage in a very pretty village. Well appointed, warm and comfortable. A perfect base to explore the surrounding countryside. Thank you for a great few days a way - our friends from Perth, Australia loved it!

Gorgeous cottage fantastic location

Fantastic value. So clean - loved the property.

Lovely cottage in a lovely village, ideal weekend away with friends, children and dogs!

Loved the sauna. The whole house was pristine and extremely comfortable.

A spotless, tastefully and extravagantly kitted-out house, in a peaceful village setting. Highly recommended as a getaway which also offers plenty of places of interest and beauty to visit within an hour’s drive.

The cottage is situated in a very picturesque village which is quiet and peaceful. The grounds are well kept, with a lovely patio area for outdoor dining with barbecue facilities. There is ample covered parking for three cars. The house itself is beautifully decorated and very homely which made for a comfortable and relaxing stay for all of us. Fresh flowers and a bottle of champagne made this birthday treat very special. The sauna room was an added bonus. We took advantage of using the offer of having food prepared by a local cook in advance of our arrival. There was a good choice of dishes and food in tolerances catered for. I have to say that this really did make our stay so much easier. Would definitely recommend as the prices were also very reasonable! All in all, a really wonderful retreat for a family get together.

Lovely property all round! Attractively furnished & decorated & spotlessly clean-the sauna I was a lovely touch!

Stunning property, well appointed in a beautiful historic village.

The Cottage was stunning and cosy and had a nice feel to the house, we loved our stay and hope to visit sometime in the future.

The Cottage was extremely clean and tidy and everything we needed was there. The surrounding area was beautiful, very quiet and peaceful, it was nice to walk around the village during the day.

Beautiful Countryside location and very pretty village. The property was a very comfortable mix of old and new and the garden very very pretty

When we arrived at the School House we were amazed at how absolutely stunning it was. It felt very welcoming (especially with the complimentary gifts) The School House is very comfortable, we didn't want to leave, all kitchen facilities were great for us to cook every evening. We made use of the spa/sauna too, what a treat that was. We met the owner too, and she told us the history of the School House and surrounding area which was very interesting. Location was spot on for lots of lovely walks . Highly recommend. 5 stars

Beautiful and comfortable cottage in a lovely quiet situation. Well placed to explore Somerset and the Dorset coast. Lovely walks in the area. Nice to have the cinema room to come back to after a day out...kept our teenagers happy (as did the surprisingly reliable WiFi!) Didn't have time to use the sauna but its a really nice addition to the property. Would definitely recommend for a family stay.

Beautiful property in lovely setting, highly recommend.

'Beautiful property in lovely setting. Would highly recommend.' - February 2020

'The cottage is beautifully appointed as well as being very warm and cosy - just what we wanted for a Christmas break. The village is a 'chocolate box' with a locals pub within easy walking distance, and is a tremendous country pub, The Queens Arms, a little further. We could not have asked for more.' - December 2019

'What a fabulous experience it was staying at School House this weekend. The cottage had been refurbished to a very high standard and it was clear that no expense had been spared and the attention to detail was superb. To be welcomed with a home made sponge cake and chocolate biscuits was fantastic. The fridge was stocked with a strawberry and blueberry fruit salad and yogurt and we had pain au chocolat and eggs for breakfast. The beds were wonderfully comfortable and to wake up with just the birds singing was an absolute treat. Whilst we did not have time to use the sauna it will be on our 'things to do list' next time we visit. We cannot recommend School House highly enough. A wonderful experience.' - November 2018
