Totnes Rare Breeds is a family owned farm which specialises and prides itself on preserving a wide range of endangered species of farm animals.
Totnes Rare Breeds is just a short walk away from Totnes’ Mainline Train Station and is a secret little gem just tucked behind this Devon Town. Set in beautiful countryside, this lovely and intimate farm is the home to a variety of endangered and rare breeds of animals from friendly alpacas to little billy goats - but most notable this farm is known for the nine beautiful and well-loved owls that live here.
Just to name a few are Wizard, the European Eagle Owl and Tommy the Tawny (short for Thomasina after discovering he was actually a she!) and the pretty Queenie, a rescue who comes from The Screech Owl Sanctuary down in Cornwall. You can even enjoy the Owl Experience on offer, which gives you the opportunity to handle and take photos with all nine birds, as well as ask the staff on hand any questions you may have. This experience last for two hours and is incredibly popular so it is recommended to book in advance to not miss out on this unique chance to get up and personal with these majestic birds.
You also have the benefit of a lovely onsite café which serves hot teas, coffees and cakes in the morning to enjoy before you explore the farm. If you need a breather and a spot of lunch, they also offer a nice range of sandwiches and paninis to tuck into – plus a lunch box for the little ones! The café is located close to the railway so on a sunny day you can sit in the pretty garden and watch the steam trains go by – absolutely bliss!
Totnes Rare Breeds also has an access-to-all ethos; their farm built with wheel chairs and buggy’s in mind with the ability to see the animals at all levels. The friendly volunteers are more than happy to help anyone with visual impairments plus carers can be admitted in for free making this wonderful place a great way for anyone and everyone to spend their afternoon at.
