Tucked away in the breathtaking South Downs countryside in Sussex is the grand National Trust Petworth House & Park. This country house was built in 17th century and is the home to an exquisite and extravagant art collection, including famous works by Gainsborough, Titian, Reynolds, Van Dyck and many more. The house is also home to the earliest English Globe in Existence which dates back to 1592! As well as paintings, there is also a lovely range and collection of sculptures; some antique and some 19th century pieces by Flaxman and Westmacott.

Inside the house you can also explore the State Rooms and the interesting and historical servant rooms. The Servant’s Quarters itself was built in the mid-18th century and was the home to 40 live in servants, whereas The Kitchen was built in 19th century and, when fully functioning, it used to serve over 100 meals a day. Inspect this ancient & historical kitchen with its steam powered technology which was installed after a fire in 1872 – there are still some original features which were preserved such as the roasting range in front of the fireplace. There is also the pastry room, still room and scullery to explore; plus many displays which reveal the hidden secrets of the servants.

The impressive estate also boasts 700 acres of landscaped park, 30 acres of woodlands known as “The Pleasure Grounds” which was laid out in the 16th century and Britian’s largest herd of fallow deer – during the Autumn months you can see the spectacle that is “the clash” where young bucks fight and lock antlers. There are a variety of walks to choose from for all abilities. The Pleasure Grounds is a great spot for a light stroll of around a mil. For something more challenging, there is the 4 mile route to one of the oldest and largest trees in the country – the 940 year old ancient oak tree. Apart from The Pleasure Grounds and the House, this estate is dog-friendly – just be sure to check the website on the restrictions.

With a shop and café on-site as well, there are many ways for you and the family to explore this estate and enjoy the gorgeous Sussex countryside. Be sure to check out the National Trust web-page to keep up to date on all the latest events that are happening at Petworth House & Park to make the most of your visit.
