Stansted House is set in 1800 acres of stunning parkland, which consists of a beautiful ancient forest – all tucked away in the breath-taking South Downs National Park.

The Grade II Edwardian House opened to the public in 1983 but was originally a hunting lodge back in the 11th century. The State Rooms are presented as the 10th Earl of Bessborough intended; step back into the past and walk around these astonishing rooms and get a sense of a bygone era. You can also have a taste of the working life down in the Servant’s Quarters below – the knowledgeable stewards bring the estate’s history to life as they guide you through each room, giving you an insight into the daily-running of this majestic house.

Stansted House is also the home to the impressive Rowlands Castle Model Railway created by Peter Ross that took seven years of research and dedication. This fully functioning miniature railway depicts a scene in World War II with amazing details all the way down to the miniature characters. You can see the characters sorting their allotments and hanging out the washing, then towards the edges you can find scenes of soldiers loading ammunition in their tents. This unique model railway is so large that it takes up most of one of the ground rooms making this a spectacle to see!

Outdoors, in the grounds, there is plenty to explore. Stansted Forest is the home to an array of sweet chestnut trees that have been standing for hundreds of years. You can also explore the glorious Stansted Maze in the Lower Garden – the circular maze opened in 2011 to the public, but the 500 yew trees that make it up were planted back in 2002. In the Lower Garden you can also find giant games such as Jenga and Chess making this area a lovely spot to relax with the little ones.

Alongside the tea room, garden centre, farm shop, the early 19th century and an exciting calendar full of events, Stansted Park House & Grounds is an idyllic day out for all the family.
