Castle Drogo, Drewsteignton

Castle Drogo, Drewsteignton

Hidden away in the depths of rural Dartmoor is the utterly beautiful Castle Drogo, situated above the stunning Teign Gorge. Originally built in the early 1900s, this gorgeous estate is made up of a grand country house, the majestic castle which was the last castle to be built in Britain as well as must-see formal gardens to explore in every season.

This Devonian gem was given to the National Trust in 1974 and is open to the public to enjoy. The castle, originally owned by the Drewe family and a Grade I listed building, has 14 rooms to visit from The Drawing room to The Library. Upon entering the castle, the first few rooms boast unique and interesting collection items and antiques which tell the story of the Drewe family and how they lived in this mammoth home.

Outside, you can amble amongst the pretty pleasure gardens which is over 12 acres. The garden is best seen during the spring months as the crocuses burst with life as does the rhododendron garden and the azalea path, especially in March. For children, there is the adorable Bunty House at the top of the garden. This cute playhouse was originally built for Frances Drewe when she was 6 years old and it comes with its very own cottage garden and inside has a play area to make ‘tea’ and play kitchen.

Castle Drogo has plenty of seasonal events for both adults and children to enjoy such as Easter Egg Hunts, Crafty Castle Capers and The Drewe Family event; be sure to keep an eye on The National Trust page to see what’s is on during your stay in Devon. As well as things for little ones to enjoy, the estate is also open to dogs. You and your four-legged friend can take a leisurely one-mile walk around the estate or, for a longer day out in the countryside, you can follow one of them many sign-posted walks around the vast and beautiful Teign Gorge.

Come rain or sunshine, Castle Drogo has a lot for families and couples alike to enjoy. Whether you are looking to much down on a Devon cream tea in the café or to lose yourself in this family’s rich history or just wanting some quality time with nature, Castle Drogo is a brilliant way to spend a day out in Devon.
