If you’re out and about exploring the incredible Holnicote Estate, managed by the National Trust, you’re sure to come across the stunning village of Selworthy, of which this iconic tearoom lies at its heart and is a must-visit for the perfect cream tea.
An iconic thatched cottage daring back to the 17th century, this wonderful spot sits on the picturesque Selworthy Green and was from 1828, an alms house for retired workers of the immense Holnicote (pronounced ‘Hunnicut’) Estate.
Changed into a tearoom in later years, this delightful eatery offers everything the hungry visitor might want, from substantial ploughman’s platters (think wedges of cheese, thick slices of ham and hearty chunks of bread) to dainty cream teas with a choice of strawberry, whortleberry, raspberry or chuckleberry jam served with lashings of clotted cream and plentiful hot tea.
If the weather is good, make sure to head to the oh-so-pretty gardens with lovely views and surrounded by verdant trees. In cooler months, head indoors and if you’re lucky, grab a cosy spot by the wood burner and gawp at the truly monumental selection of cakes to choose from.
Head next door to Clematis Cottage, also owned by the tearoom, and take a look around the shop inside which showcases beautiful items created by local artists and craftspeople who live and work on Exmoor and in the surrounding villages.
Open every day, 10am – 5pm (excluding Christmas Day).
