Smugglers is a beautiful haven with larch cladding for two in the heart of Bodmin Moor. Wonderfully rural and utterly romantic, you can leave your stresses and worries behind and enjoy the pure serenity this retreat has to offer with that special someone. Whether you watch the sunrise through the French doors of your bedroom or crack open a bottle of bubbly and watch the stars in the wooden hot tub, you will never want to leave this alluring bespoke escape. Plus there's a private paddock of half an acre for your four legged friend to explore! We're also super-pleased to announce that Smuggler's received the Country Homes & Interiors runner up prize for The Best New Build Home in 2021.

Living and eating

Stepping into Smugglers, you will find yourself in a spectacularly spacious open-plan living, dining and kitchen area with triple aspect patio doors and windows, leading out to the decking.

With luxurious oak floors throughout, the living space is wonderfully airy and boasts a matching cosy grey sofa and armchair, unique antique suspended lampshades and even a telescope to do some star watching. In this homely space, you can light the toasty wood burner, relax with a bottle of wine and enjoy the night sky over Bodmin Moor whilst snuggled on the sofa. Savour cosy evenings in front of the large Smart TV, complete with Netflix for watching your favourite films and box sets. For the cooler months there are thermostatic heaters and underfloor heating throughout the retreat.

In the stylish and modern kitchen, with real granite worktops, you will find everything one could need to rustle up a romantic meal or breakfast in bed. There is a DeLonghi bean to cup coffee machine complete with milk frother for that fresh coffee experience, plus a ceramic hob and oven, and hidden necessities such as a dishwasher and fridge with freezer compartment. There's also a KitchenAid mini food processor for all your blitzed creations. Beside the kitchen is the inviting large farmhouse table with padded chairs and sheepskin covered bench, perfect for a spot of lunch or a special evening meal.

In addition, you will find a washer/dryer in the boot room.

Sleeping

Sink into the luxuriously soft king-size bed, kitted out with 100% cotton bed linen, and take in the dazzling views out of the wide French doors. Through these lovely doors you can access the decking, so grab your morning coffee, don your large fluffy bathrobes, open up the bedroom and breathe in that fresh Cornish air. You'll also find a Smart TV in the bedroom, complete with all the must-have streaming services.

Bathing

The en-suite bathroom has a romantic free-standing bathtub for two, with a windowsill low enough to enjoy the blissful views over the Cornish hilltops with a glass of wine. There is also a divine walk-in rain shower, heated towel rails, underfloor heating and complimentary toiletries from 100 Acres. You'll also find a toilet in the boot room.

Outdoor space

Accessible from both the bedroom and the living area is a lovely wooden wrap around decking which makes the most of the spectacular views. Step down onto the gravelled courtyard complete with two sun loungers to enjoy a spot of al fresco dining or maybe have a dip in the handcrafted wood-fired hot tub. There is a further grass section, just beyond the gravelled area, which you can use to lounge on a blanket in the sun or to let your furry friend run around happily. There is also a Weber charcoal BBQ for your use, as well as a pretty herb garden should you want to cook with fresh ingredients in the kitchen. At the entrance of Smugglers, you will also find some outdoor hanging space - perfect for wetsuits after a day out in the Cornish sea. Smugglers also has a lovely wicker picnic basket, blanket and even a watercolour set for your use should you feel inspired.

Adults only

Smugglers is one of our adults-only retreats.

Dogs

Three well behaved dogs are very welcome at Smugglers. There is a dog towel, water bowl and food bowl for your four-legged friend. The garden is enclosed and secure, however there are a couple of rings ties as well should you fear your furry friend will make a dash for it. There is also a dedicated dog walking paddock right next to Smugglers, comprising of over half an acre of trees, wild flowers and grasses, fenced with wire and wooden rails. Please note that dogs do need to be kept under strict control at Smugglers as there is a lot of livestock in adjacent fields to the property. Please note, there is an additional fee per dog, per week or short break.

WiFi

Smugglers does have WiFi via Starlink satellite, so if you need to keep in touch with the outside world you can.

Location

Please be aware that the last 400 meters of the access route is via a rough farm track, in case you have a car with low profile tyres or low suspension. Smugglers is located on its own, in a peaceful location, approximately 200 metres away from the owners' farmhouse.

Smoking

Smugglers is a non-smoking property and we ask that guests don't smoke anywhere at the property or in the grounds due to being situated on moorland and the potential for wildfires, thank you for your understanding.

Spa Treatments

The owners can arrange in house spa treatments so you can relax and unwind in your beautiful surroundings.

In the Area

At Smugglers you have the whole of Bodmin Moor at your fingertips. From the cottage you can see Brown Wily, Roughtor, Garrow Tor, Hawks Tor, Alex Tor and King Arthurs Hall; a walker's paradise to which you can hike from Smugglers to each of these famous Cornish landmarks. The surrounding area is used as a film location for the TV series Poldark and Doc Martin so you may see some familiar sites and scenes!

For those wanting to catch a wave or two on the beautiful North Coast, you are just a 30-minute drive from both Trebarwith Strand and Polzeath Beach. You are also only 40 minutes from the stunning Tintagel Castle which overlooks the dramatic and rugged North coastline.

A 40-minute drive away is the beloved foodie capital Padstow. This characterful fishing port boasts the well-known Camel Cycle Trail, golden beaches near by and a wide breadth of delicious restaurants to dine at.

Hidden away from the hustle and bustle, our luxury retreat is oh-so-romantic, with a wood-fired hot tub and blissful views across the North Cornish countryside.

We know how gorgeous our retreats are, but don’t just take our word for it – here’s what previous guests say about Smugglers:

Smugglers was a next level retreat. We stayed in absolute bliss for a week with our dog and had absolutely everything that we could have possibly needed for our stay. The location was perfect for us and we enjoyed being able to escape the busyness of the Cornish towns to the property each afternoon. Whilst being out on the moor, the property is very accessible to the main attractions. We particularly enjoyed visiting the suggestions in the guide book and I must recommend the seafood spot in Port Isaac. Steve went beyond to ensure we had what we needed and even proactively looked out dog-sitting options for us. We would absolutely return!

Great location, very peaceful with amazing views. Accommodation was as described and was a lovely place to spend the week

A wonderful place to stay and experience the wonders of Cornish landscape and wild life. Quite unique!

Stunning, one of the loveliest properties we’ve had the pleasure of staying in.

Smugglers is a very special place. The combination of relaxing decor, spectacular views, a unique location and the proximity to limitless hiking and exploring make for a very enjoyable and relaxing stay.

EVERYTHING has been considered within the property. You will want for nothing and it was also spotlessly clean. The owners are friendly and on hand should you need them, passing on some great local tips for pubs and walks.

The wood-fired hot tub was so nice after a long hike, just soaking and enjoying the spectacular views and birdsong was truly relaxing.

Wow, what a place. If you are looking for a peaceful, relaxing and mindful zone then Smugglers is perfect. Beautiful decor with everything you need and the most comfortable bed! Perfect for a peaceful walk on the moors but also so close to all of the picturesque seaside towns of north Cornwall. We will definitely be back so thank you!

Peaceful secluded and tranquil. We had an amazing week and left feeling so relaxed. A lot of thought has gone into the layout and presentation of this property.

Three weeks before our arrival, our other holiday in Cornwall had been cancelled, so imagine our joy when we found Smugglers was available and arrived here with this beautiful view! The past six months for my husband and myself have been incredibly tough. We will leave here feeling completely rested, relaxed and forever grateful that Steve and Sue shared their beautiful place with us… there is so much wonderful wildlife here.

Smugglers itself is so beautifully furnished… just love all the extras like the telescope, hot tub, bath and wood burner… Not to mention the gorgeous goodies in the fridge when we arrived. Even our beautiful dog Harley zoned out and relaxed completely. He also loved his treats, doggy towels and blankets. Thank you both so much!

We loved it!

Our third stay at Smugglers - that's how much we love it! So peaceful and relaxing with everything you need. Despite some fairly inclement weather, we still managed walks from the cottage over the moors and up the Tors , and evenings in the hot tub just listening to the birds singing - heavenly. Cannot fault it and we will return... again!!

Excellent property in an idyllic and peaceful location.

The most amazing location and super helpful hosts. I would thoroughly recommend going there.

A real home from home. Beautiful, peaceful and has everything you would want for a cosy magical stay!

Smugglers is a super comfortable bolt hole in an amazing location, would highly recommend.

A lovely comfortable private retreat. Best night sky viewing ever. So many shooting stars. The owner has thought of everything to make your stay excellent. We were very pleased.

Beautiful and relaxing. We can't wait to come back! Perfectly positioned for some rest and relaxation, and great to have your dog stay with you. We can't thank you enough.

Great place to have a peaceful holiday and the surrounding views across the moors are perfect.

Smugglers was a fantastic retreat in an amazing setting and had everything you could need to be really comfortable. We love being able to take our two Jack Russells away with us and stay in luxury too. We loved the interior with all the luxury touches in the bathroom, the bath, shower & underfloor heating were a treat. We tried the hot tub once and had an amazing eve watching the stars and soaking in the delicious hot water. We would have used it again but we had some wet weather and got too cosy indoors! We enjoyed our welcome hamper and the wine & chocolate that you sent us for our anniversary. Thank you for that it was a yummy suprise & special to be remembered like that. Steve, the owner was friendly, helpful & welcoming. I think the only thing that was a bit challenging was the unmade track! Overall it was a fantastic holiday & we loved staying at Smuggers and of course being in Cornwall again.

Beautiful cottage with everything you need. Robes and slippers where a lovely touch and handy for getting in and out the hot tub.

Such a special place! From the first drive through the tunnel of trees into the open moorland with wild horses, sheep and cows welcoming you, to the arrival at this beautiful house in the most stunning location. Our week was perfect! We walked each morning on Rock Beach to Daymer Bay and back across the sand dunes. Evenings spent walking to the Tors on Bodmin Moor and back to watch the light change to dusk from the stunning place we called home for a few days.

Great for peace and seclusion. The location of smugglers is perfect if you want peace and quiet and access to the great outdoors. The uninterrupted views across Bodmin Moor are impressive and we enjoyed watching the wildlife which included lambs, ponies, swifts and buzzards.

The cabin itself is tastefully decorated and well equipped with things like board games, jigsaw puzzles, binoculars and a telescope. The kitchen is also well equipped.

Bed was comfy and the bathroom was particularly impressive - lovely double bath and spacious rainfall shower, kept cosy with the underfloor heating.

Everything was cleaned to a high standard throughout.

We found this a good base location for walking and for visiting the surrounding areas with many of the coastal towns just a short drive away.

On the whole, a lovely place with great views, we had a thoroughly relaxing break despite bad weather.

Our fourth visit to Smugglers and we have now seen it in all four seasons. We love this spot as we are avid bird watchers and its great to see the so many types of birds. Wonderful accommodation and a big thank you to Sue and Steve for making it all happen.

We had the most amazing stay at smugglers it absolutely exceeded our expectations! It was so peaceful and tranquil with views that stretch for miles. The lodge itself was peak comfort and the was absolutely everything you needed in fact the kitchen was better stocked and equipped than our own at home! Thank you so much both xx

Unbelievable location!

A stunning property offering peace and privacy in a wild and stunning landscape with all the comforts that you could ever need for an unforgettable stay. Would return without hesitation and it is probably the best Boutique Retreat we have ever stayed in.

Amazing property. Unlike other places we have stayed, everything we could possibly need to enjoy our holiday was provided, from sufficient cleaning products to a lovely welcome pack of food and Prosecco and so on.

We really enjoyed the peace and tranquility of Smugglers and the cottage was really comfortable and well equipped. It was a great base for exploring the surrounding area and for walks from the door. Our hosts were very thoughtful too.

This is the best cottage we have stayed in, hence our second visit! Everything about it is perfect - the peace and tranquility of the location (not a soul around!), walks from the front door, very dog friendly especially for an anxious dog like ours, beautiful interiors and facilities, amazing hot tub and bath. The most relaxing week - we shall definitely be back for a third visit!

What an amazing place! The cottage is full of thoughtful details and it seems like they have literally thought of everything. The quality of the furnishings is excellent and it’s such a comfortable, welcoming place that you instantly relax and enjoy it. The owners are friendly and discreet and the location/view is wild and dramatic. Book it, you won’t regret it! We were only sorry we couldn’t stay forever!

Magical, unique, heavenly retreat for luxury, splendid isolation amongst the beauty of Bodmin moor.

Approaching the farm from the lanes in the darkness and encountering our first herd of cows, we knew we were in for a treat. Met by the lovely Steve, whom gave us all the information we needed for a lovely, relaxing stay. Smugglers is super stunning and is fully equipped with everything you could possibly need. Upon walking in the morning and watching the sun rise over the horizon, I was in awe of the beautiful views - what a place! Hot tub, champagne and the starry sky, what more could you ask for. We had an amazing time and will definitely return.

The perfect place to hunker down and properly retreat, even in the pouring rain the scenery from the comfort of the lounge was simply stunning and all absorbing making it very easy to sit and simply soak it in! It is a eautiful place with really tasteful interior and furnishings. We were made to feel very welcome by Steve and Sue but very much left alone which was perfect for a real retreat.

A cosy haven of tranquility with stunning moorland views.

The owners have really thought about everything.

We have had a fabulous week here in the most perfect of settings. You have created a real retreat with everything you could need and more! Thank you! Highlights of our stay were a walk out from here, taking in tors and stone circles. A walk to Golitha Falls and lunch at Inkies, and to be honest just sitting and enjoying the views and watching the wildlife. Our miniature Schnauzer has not lifted his nose from the ground - so many sniffs! Thank you.

Stunning property and location. High expectations well and truly exceeded! Perfect place for a quiet getaway.

This was our 3rd visit to Smugglers and can't rate it highly enough. For us it ticks all our boxes and Steve and Sue are great hosts.

Smugglers was an absolutely gorgeous retreat, in a wonderful location, beautifully decorated and with everything you could possibly need for a fabulous relaxing stay.

Smugglers was fantastic - we loved everything about it and was perfect for our 2 dogs - we would definitely look to return.

What an exceptional place you have made here. The perfect spot for a honeymoon and we have had the perfect first week of marriage! The garden is beautiful, the hot tub inspire a future purchase, and the views were to die for. Ambling through Bodmin moor was truly healing to the soul and we can now retun to our daily routines fully charged and refreshed.

We are always spoilt for food choices and this trip was no diferent. Thank you for the recommendations of Boscastle Farm Shop and Peckish Fish & Chips.

It has been a beautiful week with many great memories made. Wishing you all the best in the future.

Absolutely gorgeous place...both indoors and out. Beautiful garden teeming with wildlife against a backdrop of rolling hills and sheep. We especially loved the way the owners had created meadows for wildlife including a secure paddock for the dogs to run in. Steve and Sue the owners, acted very promptly during a power cut to Smugglers and got everything up and running whilst we were out. Exquisite holiday.....

Lovely oasis of calm.

Thank you again for making Smugglers such a special place with an immaculate attention to details. We've enjoyed our second stay here even more. Seeing the area at a different time of year was such a joy. Positive we will be back again!

Lovely open space with a secluded feel. Great walks on the door step, with friendly host who made you feel nothing would be an issue if you needed anything. I had a relaxing time away from London life. The house and garden are beautiful.

A unique property set in a peaceful location. Fabulous local products provided in the welcome pack and the wood fired hot hub was a real novelty. We would definitely come back as we feel completely rested.

This is wonderful slice of paradise. The property interior and facilities are excellently thought through with perfect decor and features. The location demands that you relax and soak in the peace and tranquillity ….. assisted with the most amazing hot tub and wine!! It is clear that you have put a great deal of yourselves into Smugglers. Steve and Sue are perfect hosts….available if required but they leave you alone. We had a truly wonderful break.

Beautiful cottage - so peaceful with stunning views from every window and in the garden. Everything had been thought of - both for us and our dog. Despite a battering from Storm Dudley and Eunice we enjoyed some stunning walks, coming back to relax in the hot tub (wood fired so no noise and remained hot even in the wind and rain). Just wish we could have stayed longer - will definitely be back, hopefully in some less inclement weather!

As above

A wonderful return to Smugglers, we felt all the worries of the world lift the second we came in the door. Such a wonderful place to relax, chill and recharge the batteries. Thank you for the lovely treats, always a welcome. Lovely walks on the moor and to The Old Inn. Looking forward to coming back.

We have thoroughly enjoyed our short break at this charming lodge. The accommodation has been very well thought through with lovely finishing touches everywhere. I needed a sewing kit for an emergency repair - and there it was. Thank you. The location is fabulous with amazing views in every direction. We could have sat all day and just looked out, especially as we love bird watching (great sightings of fieldfare, readings and trush) plus great starling fly past each evenings. We ventured out and did a great walk at Cardinham Woods, followed by excellent tea and cake. But highlight was a walk to Brown Willy for one day, followed by amazing lunch at Paul Ainsworth at No6, Padstow as it was our Pearl Wedding Anniversary. We will be back I am sure. We loved it.

As above

sue and Steve above and beyond to make us comfortable. All the little extra touches you wouldn’t expect in a normal self catering made it a home from home. The location and views are awesome. Being truly dog friendly again help us unplug and rewind, Frank appreciated the treats and nice blanket! We will be back again and again.

The cottage was absolutely beautiful, perfect balance of luxury and laid back cosiness!

Absolute luxury! Our second time staying at Smugglers now and it was every bit as perfect as the first. Sue and Steve are excellent, attentive hosts and made sure we had everything we needed. There’s no doubt that we’ll be back again for a third visit at some point.

Smugglers was an absolute slice of paradise! From walking in to see a ball for each of our dogs to the log burning stove; from the thoughtful welcome pack to the spectacular starry skies at night in the hot tub.

The cottage ticks all the boxes you could want from a boutique retreat - beautiful interior, comfy sofas, lovely bed and linens, hot tub, bath, log burning stove, amazing sunsets and starry skies, dog friendly… a place to truly unwind!

The owners of the property went above and beyond for us which just made the stay perfect. They provided suggestions on places to get some special surprises for a 30th birthday, they made sure the surprises were in the property when we were out, and they helped with the log fired hot tub when we were struggling.

I highly recommend boutique retreats, and Smugglers for a perfect break away, and will definitely be back!

See what’s written above.

It was our first holiday with boutique retreats and it exceeded our expectations

Absolutely loved our honeymoon at smugglers. Set in a stunning location and has all the luxuries you could hope for.

A wonderful idyllic retreat from everyday life

Excellent standard of accomodation with the owners both very welcoming and helpful regarding any queries we had.

Heaven

We wanted to escape from the crowded side of Cornwall and this beautiful retreat exceeded our expectations: surrounded by nature with jumping lambs, swallows nesting in the roof and walks aplenty on the moors !

Smugglers was beautiful . The location was stunning . Furnishings and decor were top quality and beautifully thought out. The owners were friendly and welcoming , but never intrusive , and there were very thoughtful touches throughout the property . We honestly did not want to leave !

Most beautiful views and so relaxing. Welcome gifts were lovely and we had the most incredible time!

An outstanding cottage in a fantastic location. Standard of furnishing and facilities are second to none. Would return tomorrow if we could.

We absolutely loved our stay at Smugglers. A fantastic place to relax, unwind and get away from it all with all the little touches of luxury you could want. We just wished we could have stayed for longer!

A wonderful home from home. Can’t wait to stay at Smugglers again soon!

Top quality furnishing, it was like been at your own home.

It truly is fantastic. Very well thought out, perfect for couples and dog owners! Sue and Steve are lovely owners who genuinely want you to have a lovely time and enjoy the area. We felt extremely safe there and the guide book was excellent and very informative. Lovely little touches around the retreat from the dog treats to toiletries, welcome basket in the fridge and dog paddock! Can’t wait to go back!

Lovely hosts, not at all intrusive very respectful of your privacy if that’s what you want. But they are more than happy to help in any way if you need them.

The cottage and welcome far outweighed our expectations. Everything to the highest quality and every gadget we could think of was there!

We loved Smugglers and so did our 2yr lab Ralph. Lots of love and thought had obviously gone into the design and set up of the property, everything we could possibly have needed was there. I have a reputation in the family for picking holiday spots that are a little off the beaten track and Smugglers definitely fits that bill! Saying that, it is only a short drive to the village where we enjoyed a fantastic Sunday roast in front of the log fire at the village pub as recommended by Sue the owner when she warmly welcomed us on Friday afternoon. I only wish we had the same windows at home as they have at Smugglers as they kept out any whisper of the gale blowing outside leaving us all warm and cosy whereas at home our curtains move with the draughts!!

One of the nicest places we've ever stayed. Everything was immaculately clean and tidy, everything in working order, nigh on flawless throughout! We'll definitely be returning.

'Beautiful scenery and amazing wildlife. Been a pleasure to have quality downtime in such a wonderful setting. Great attention to detail, Sue and Steve really have hit the mask with aim of high-end but comfortable. Perfectly dog friendly with its enclosed garden and paddock, although Mozzy really was fascinated with the balls of wool moving around adjacent fields! All in all, bloomin' lovely week.' - June 2021
