'Rivendell was perfect, whether you liked food, or sleep, or work, or story-telling, or singing, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all.' - Lord of the Rings.
Although not quite the last homely house from Tolkien's famous books, this fabulous retreat is a marvellously welcoming home for ten lucky people. With exquisite interiors, huge social spaces, en suite bedrooms and bags of outdoor space, it's ideal for multi-generational families or a group of friends wanting to spend time together. It's also dog friendly (two are most welcome), so your furry friends needn't be left behind. Situated just above the village of Boscastle, you're ideally positioned to explore the wonderful north Cornish coastline and places such as Padstow, Rock, Polzeath, the Camel Estuary, Bodmin Moor, Tintagel and Bude.
Living
There are two exceptional rooms for gatherings; the incredible sitting room is just huge with high vaulted ceiling, sofas that easily seat ten, massive wood burning stove and large coffee table. The size of this space is hard to capture but it's perfect for large gatherings with glass doors leading outside for when the soiree spills into the garden on summery nights. We just adore the touches of green that makes this room so bright and pretty, and there's a huge 65-inch OLED smart TV for when only a film night will do.
In addition, there's a gorgeous snug with seating for five (plus a fab furry beanbag). Complete with a 40-inch LED television, this is great for those seeking a little peace and quiet or for kids to escape to if they want their own space.
There's also a great games room with a pool table, table football, darts board and plenty of books and board games to keep everyone entertained, plus there's SONOS throughout the main living areas.
Eating
The beautiful country kitchen with wooden worktops is just a joy to cook in with a separate electric oven and hob, Belfast sink, separate island with breakfast bar and all the equipment you'll need to rustle up feasts including the all-important bean to cup filter coffee machine. The vaulted ceiling, flagged flooring and exposed stone walls add lots of Cornish character to this light and airy room.
Next door, you'll find the lovely formal dining room with huge table and plenty of comfy seating for ten. The beamed ceiling and cosy feel make is a perfect spot for dinner parties that last well into the night, and glass doors lead outside, so you can leave them open on warm, balmy nights.
Sleeping and bathing
There are five glorious bedrooms, each individually designed and beautifully peaceful, making them a perfect refuge at the end of the day.
Upstairs, the master bedroom is en suite and has a sumptuous king size Hypnos bed, plenty of built in wardrobes, spacious vaulted ceiling and glass door leading outside. The en suite has a freestanding bath and shower. There are two further bedrooms upstairs - a king bedroom with an en suite shower room and a zip-and-link bedroom meaning it can be set up as either twins or a super king bed and has an en suite with a bath with shower overhead. Downstairs, there's a further zip-and-link bedroom and a king bedroom with an en suite shower room.
Each bedroom is beautifully decorated with carefully chosen artwork and storage, and beds are swathed in gorgeous linens and goose down duvets and pillows (hypoallergenic bedding available on request). There's an additional cloak room on the ground floor with a loo and sink.
Outdoor space
To the front of the house lies the gated garden with extensive lawn, sunny terrace and outbuildings for storage. With unspoilt views over rolling fields and out to sea, this is a marvellous spot to relax in on sunny days. There's a table and chairs for alfresco dining too.
Babies and children
A cot, highchair and stairgate are available on request - please bring your own bedding.
Dogs
Two well-behaved dogs are very welcome at Rivendell. Please note, there is an additional fee per dog, per week or short break.
WiFi
Rivendell has WiFi so if you need to stay in touch with the outside world you can.
Parking
There is plenty of private parking at Rivendell.
In the Area
Perched high on the hills looking down over Boscastle and out to sea, you couldn't ask for a more idyllic setting. Head down to the coast and you can join the South West Coastal Path in either direction for stupendous, scenery-loaded walks whilst inland you'll find ancient woodland and Minster Church, a spiritual site since the 6th century. The village of Boscastle itself has plenty of places to visit or get a bite to eat and drink, such as the National Trust shop and café, whilst pubs The Cobweb, The Riverside or The Napoleon are fab places for a drink and pub grub. Boscastle Farm Shop is worth exploring plus there's a café too, whilst Tintagel Brewery and Restaurant Nathan Outlaw are a short drive away. There's an abundance of beaches nearby for windswept walks during winter or long sunny days swimming; Bude, Widemouth Bay, Bossiney Haven, Trebarwith Strand and Polzeath are well worth a visit.
