Country Living Dreams at Cheyne Cottage

Country Living Dreams at Cheyne Cottage

We excitedly waited for Friday to arrive for our magical experience to begin. When we arrived at Cheyne Cottage, which is located in a wonderfully tranquil setting in the village of Broadhempston, we were welcomed to a beautiful, chocolate-box pretty cottage with quaint gardens and outdoor space. Cheyne Cottage sleeps six guests and welcomes one dog - perfect for welcoming a group of friends or a family stay.

I eagerly made my way through the front door to find the amazing open plan kitchen with a cosy wood burning stove and living area which opens out to the garden, as well as the country-style dining area. This spacious design is perfect for families, couples, and friends to spend some time together enjoying the warmth of the wood burning stove, playing games, watching TV or taking some time out to relax with a good book. The master en suite is also located on the ground floor, promising a charming bed-knobs-and-broomsticks bed, with golden hour sunlight through the skylight and floor to ceiling window.

The kitchen is fantastically equipped to rustle up the best breakfast, light lunch or delightful dinners and so thoughtfully curated by the retreat owners. Having the space of the breakfast bar makes hosting a family or a group of friends at Cheyne Cottage an absolute joy!

Skipping upstairs I was delighted to discover two more gorgeously appointed bedrooms, all with beds swathed in luxurious linens and throws. The king bedroom is a dream with a characterful, original fireplace, whilst the twin bedroom is perfect for little ones with darling wrought iron beds. The family bathroom offers a refreshing shower or a very much needed soak in the bathtub! The thought of my first blissful night’s sleep at Cheyne Cottage was a tempting one, but first I headed out to the garden to enjoy the late afternoon sun with my family.

We were thrilled to discover the welcome hamper left for us and relished the complimentary wine in the enclosed garden. With two very excited girls, it was wonderful for them to have the freedom to roam free in the sunshine. The entire garden was totally safe and secure which was reassuring for us, and the trees surrounding the garden made it a perfectly private space to relax. Having enjoyed some fresh air, we headed back indoors for some quality family time - playing the piano and a competitive game of Connect 4! The girls settled in their bedrooms peacefully drifting off to sleep, whilst I made full use of the kitchen preparing a hearty dinner for us to feast on.

After the most restful slumber in super comfy beds, we were ready for the day ahead. Our day began with a delicious breakfast prepared with some of the hamper products so generously provided by the owners, followed by a little wander around the village exploring Broadhempston Church, the Community Shop and the girls were delighted to find the playpark to burn off some energy! In the afternoon, we ventured to Totnes which is a fabulous town to explore as a family. As well as having an alternative vibe, it's also home to some fabulous boutique and independent shops, a twice-weekly market and a monthly Sunday Good Food market. Totnes Castle is also a must, promising far-reaching views across the town rooftops to the River Dart. We returned for a cosy evening at the cottage, for fireside moments and a glass of something special after our day of exploring.

 Fireside moments at Cheyne Cottage

Cheyne Cottage is a beautifully presented cottage in a lovely village, within just 20 minutes of the moors and around half an hour from the coast, making it a perfect base for exploring all the delights that Devon has to offer. We awoke to a fresh February morning and made another wholesome breakfast using our hamper goodies, which we enjoyed on the patio listening to the birds tweeting and the horses trotting by. Cheyne Cottage is a complete haven and a world away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and we hadn’t felt this relaxed in quite some time! After refuelling, we visited the River Dart Country Park set in 90 acres of parkland within Dartmoor National Park. As one of Devon’s best-loved family attractions, the park is packed with activities, so be sure to arrive early for a great day out. We were excited to return to the cottage for a spot of relaxing in the garden with a glass of wine in hand, soaking up the late afternoon sun and a glorious sunset - the perfect end to our day and stay…
