Why ‘Cornish’ when quite clearly you are in Devon? One may ask. The proximity to the rolling hills of Dartmoor tends to be a bit of a location giveaway. The Cornish Arms, in the heart of Tavistock was the very last coaching inn before Cornwall, which thus earned it its name.
The focus is on taste, keeping everything simple and letting the big flavours shine through.
A visit to The Cornish Arms is a must, simply because of the endearing ethos that owners Jon and Emma have got going on. They reopened, in 2013, the pub with a focus on making it a super duper place that they would love to come and enjoy themselves. As such the atmosphere is engaging and warm coupled with fantastic ales and rather rambunctious food.
John is a chef through and through. A holder of 3AA rosettes, a regular in the Good Food Guide – and of course that stint on BBC2’s Great British Menu he really knows his onions when it comes to food and flavour.
His philosophy is simple, he makes the most of the best ingredients from the South West, cooks with the seasons ensuring the freshest produce can be used and mixes classic combinations with big hearty flavours. The focus is on taste, keeping everything simple and letting the big flavours shine through.
For example, sink your teeth into slow roast best end of lamb shepherd’s pie with broccoli, mint sauce, or wrap your chops around confit leg of Sladesdown duck with parsley risotto, summer truffle and duck gravy. Yum!
