Penlee House Gallery and Museum, Penzance

Penlee House Gallery and Museum, Penzance

Built in 1865, this grand former Victorian home has been lovingly restored to become a home for a brilliant art gallery, specialising in local artists including the famed Newlyn School, whilst the museum showcases over 6,000 years of history across west Cornwall. The licensed cafe serves fab coffee, cake and afternoon tea as well as light lunches. Penlee is also host to many events, especially during the school holidays.

Tucked away down a pretty street lined with Victorian town houses, Penlee is in a pretty setting, surrounded by lush sub-tropical gardens. Take a moment or two to walk through the gardens then head inside to take a look at the fabulous gallery and museum.

Particular attention is paid here to the Newlyn School, an art movement who found inspiration in the small fishing port just down the road in Newlyn and includes artists such as Stanhope Forbes.

In the museum, you can learn more about the archaeological sites that are scattered across Penwith (the name for the far west of Cornwall) and also the fascinating social history of this tucked-away corner of the UK.
