Mwnt Beach, Cardigan

Mwnt Beach, Cardigan

Overlooking Cardigan Bay to its north, the award-winning Mwnt Beach sits within a Special Area of Conservation along Wales’ rugged coastline. Backed by towering cliffs and accessible via a set of steps, its golden sands and gently sloping shore are a welcome sight.

Attracting lots of admirers each year for its beauty, some of Mwnt Beach’s visitors receive particular attention. Well known for dolphin, porpoise and even basking shark sightings, the beach is a wonderful place to sit with a pair of binoculars, eyes trained on the horizon and warm sun dancing across your face. On a really clear day, you can even see as far as the mountains of Snowdonia.

For a refreshing dip the waters of the Blue Fag beach are hugely inviting, especially on hot days. There are no lifeguards on duty throughout the year, but the beach is regarded as safe for swimming in the summer months. Go for a relaxing swim or paddle in the shallows and let your worries float away.

If you would like to visit Mwnt Beach with your family, the National Trust run a car park above the beach and the Ceredigion Heritage Coastal Path runs right around the top of the bay. There is a little kiosk selling refreshments and some beach equipment, so you can treat yourself to a tasty pick-me-up and cool drink. Be advised that the steps leading down to the beach itself render it unsuitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. There are toilets available.
