Fishbourne Roman Palace

Fishbourne Roman Palace

Discovered in 1960, this ancient site is home to the largest collection of early Roman mosaic floors in Britain as well as an accompanying film, tour, Museum Gallery, recreated formal garden and fascinating Roman Garden museum.

Transport yourself back in time to this incredible palace – discover what life was like for the Roman elite with elaborate heated mosaic floors (including the spectacular Cupid on a dolphin) seen from elevated platforms. A film explores what the palace would have looked like 2,000 years ago and how the Romans would have lived in the wilds of Britain at that time.

Wander through the meticulously recreated gardens with box hedging and espalier fruit trees and see how the Romans use the herbs, fruit and vegetables for cooking, medicines and dyeing fabrics within the Roman Garden Museum – fascinating for experienced gardeners and beginners alike.

Peer at the hordes of artefacts housed in the Museum gallery which were discovered during the excavation – finds include jewellery, a marble bust (thought to be a rare image of the Emperor Nero as a child) and other personal items.
