This marvellous animal sanctuary is the biggest of its kind in Cornwall. Filled with a wonderful variety of exotic bird species and animals from around the world, this animal haven is located on the Cornish Southern Coast just a short drive from Fowey, Polperro and Looe.
Porfell Wildlife Park has been creating specialised homes for all sorts of animals since 1989. Once a small farm with a selection of pigs and chickens, this sanctuary nowadays is a paradise for exotic creatures from beautiful birds like kookaburras and macaws to incredible mammals such as monkeys and zebras. Also – one must not forget the ever-growing family of meerkats that this wildlife park is famous for! The sanctuary prides itself on its conservation work, putting these animals needs first and creating a safe home for elderly, sick and problem animals where they can live out the rest of their lives in peace and tranquillity.
There are plenty of residents to visit during your trip to Porfell as well as a tempting range of displays to see these majestic animals in action. Watch the owls daily on their flight training as they soar through the sky, see the coatis forage and hunt with their sharp noses or see the unique reptiles like the giant leopard tortoise and the bearded dragon in their own habitat. You can also get up close and personal with the cuddly and friendly lemurs; hand feed these playful creatures and sit beside them in their enclosure as nibble on their lunch. For little ones, there is also the Children’s Farm where you can pet many farmyard favourites such as rabbits, donkeys, llamas, chipmunks and many more.
The sanctuary itself is separated into many different sections. Learn the ways of the Maasai Warrior at the Massai Village, the park’s very own authentic African Plains village complete with traditionally built huts and interesting displays of craft and clothing to highlight African culture. The village is also right in the middle of the zebra, eland and ostrich enclosure so you can get a real experience of African life up and close with these stunning animals. There is also the Anicent Woodland which is filled with wetland areas to cultivate willow and alder, as well as dry areas which support ask, oak and beech trees. This peaceful area is an ideal place to take a picnic and enjoy some of Cornwall’s native plants and forest animals. Forgot your sandwiches? Pay a visit to the Savannah Tea Room for a hot cup of tea, sweet treats and that all-important Cornish Pasty.
Much larger than it looks, you and your family can easily lose yourself in this adored and rich sanctuary. Whether you’re looking to have a fun day out in Cornwall or wanting to treat someone special to a unique animal experience, there is so much to do and explore at Porfell Wildlife Park.
Porfell Wildlife Park regrets that it cannot accept dogs on its premise for the safety of the animals.
