Think Cornwall? Think camels. No, not the river. Actual camels. Humps and all. Think we are joking? Think again. Although it may not be the natural connection you would make, a trip to Lizard Peninsula will provide you with all the answers and excellent day out for all of the family.
Just a stone’s throw from the famous Goonhilly Earth Station on the Lizard’s Goonhilly Downs, Cornish Camels is a privately-owned farm that is home to more than just your usual furry and feathered suspects. As well as a number of Welsh black cattle and sheep, this organic farm is home to a herd of Bactrian camels.
Over 2 meters tall and weighing in at a whopping 1,000 kg, these magnificent camels originally hail from Central Asia. Adorned with two humps and a beautiful shaggy coat, they are adapted to withstand a number of harsh conditions, from the cold to drought to high altitudes, making them more than comfortably equipped for life in the Lizard!
To see them for yourself, pay a visit to the farm and have a wander around. There is plenty of free parking and you can spend as much or as little time as you like meeting the residents. For children, the farm’s sand bit brings the beach a little closer, and later you can make use of the picnic area to lap up the sunshine.
Situated in an awe-inspiring part of the Lizard, a stroll around the farm’s trails is definitely in order once you have bid the camels your farewells. For further exploration, you can also pick up one of the paths around the Goonhilly Downs Nature Reserve. Owned and maintained by the Cornish Wildlife Trust, the reserve encompasses a broad area of Cornish heath and is home to a variety of plants and wildlife.
