Out & About

For a luxury holiday in Cornwall, look no further than the UK’s most southerly point. An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the wonderful Lizard boasts a unique allure; wildflowers grow in abundance, the craggy shoreline is home to families of seals and incredible birdlife including the rare Cornish chough, and the beaches are as dazzling as anywhere in the world.

Not only boasting the impressive title of mainland Britain’s most southerly point, the Lizard is also within a stone’s throw of some of west Cornwall’s prettiest fishing villages and most jaw-dropping natural beauty spots. Visit Cadgwith, Coverack, Mullion and St Keverne, before making tracks to the stunning Kynance Cove and taking in the sights in wide-eyed wonder.

Browse our collection of Boutique Retreats and take a step closer to days at the Lizard Point, long coastal walks, Roskilly’s ice cream and Anne’s pasties overlooking the most glorious views. With so much on offer, there are few other places in the country where you can stroll out the door of your luxury cottage and be immediately met with towering cliffs and the shimmering sea.

There are plenty of places in the Lizard for a bite to eat. If you’re walking the South West Coast Path, Polpeor Café is a must-visit. The UK’s most southerly café, its clifftop position is truly breath-taking. Enjoy the views with one of their incredible home-made, tea plate-sized doughnuts with dollops of clotted cream and jam (it’s OK – you can walk it off!).

As well as Polpeor, Wavecrest Café also sits at the Lizard Point and enjoys awesome panoramas. For expertly-spun fare, head to Coast Coffee Bar and Bistro; in the heart of the village this restaurant has lovely inside and outside seating and is run by a friendly, dedicated team. For hearty pub grub and a pint, the Witchball sits opposite Coast and has a super beer garden.

A little further afield, Roskilly’s has a great restaurant so if you’re visiting the farm make sure to stop off there. If you still can’t make up your mind, you can also head to the nearby foodie hub of Porthleven which benefits from lots of excellent restaurants, including the Square, Seadrift, Kota, Kota Kai and Rick Stein’s.

There are plenty of little cafés for a tea stop here; pull yourself from the comforts of your luxury cottage in the Lizard and wander over to Coast or Fat Jack’s for a morning pick-me-up. In the afternoon, a drive over to Fat Apple’s near Porthallow will prove a real winner for tasty treats washed down with a delicious drink.

If you are after something a little stronger (well, you are on holiday), both the Witchball and the Tophouse are full of character and have bars brimming with both national and regional wines, beers and spirits so you can find something to hit just the right spot. Further afield, there’s the Black Swan in Gweek or the Halzephron Inn in Gunwalloe.

If you don’t mind the drive, 10 miles away in Helston you’ll find the Blue Anchor in Helston which brews its own beer (the infamous Spingo). Alternatively, you could just stay cuddled up in your boutique Lizard cottage and indulge in a cosy night in with a bottle fizz, watching a movie, reading a book or chatting long into the night…

For lovers of nature you’re spoilt for choice – as a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty you’ll find coastline to die for and moorland to explore, both filled with an abundance of flora and fauna. There are some excellent beaches – Kynance Cove, Coverack and Gunwalloe to name just a few – perfect for a lazy day. The Lizard Lighthouse, the Marconi Centre at Poldhu Cove, St Winwaloe Church and Roskilly’s are good places to visit and there’s always the South West Coastal Path to walk along.

If you like being on (or in!) the water, there are lots of swimming and diving opportunities to be had as well. Sign up for a day of coasteering and have a hoot whist also appreciating a completely new perspective of the coast. From Cadgwith, Nigel Legge will take you on a boat trip out to sea, taking you past the Devil's Frying Pan, Church Cove and Lizard Lifeboat Station. At the end of a day’s adventures, return to your private self-catering accommodation and relax in front of the fire, atmosphere warm, Champagne cold and conversation flowing.
