Twisting and weaving your way through tiny country lanes you arrive at Fat Apples Café. Half a mile from Porthallow, a quiet fishing village untainted by commercialism, Fat Apples is a family-run café. One of the best hidden cafés in Cornwall, its secluded location gives it an exclusive feel, only frequented by those who make the effort to find it and closely guarded by those who have discovered its charms.

Adopting seasonal opening hours, the best time to visit Fat Apples Café is in the summer. This is because the café’s seating is largely weighted outdoors, with not much space inside. Take a seat at one of the many outdoor tables and soak in the sunshine as you run your finger over the menu. Inscribed with enticing concoctions, you can choose a light bite or wholesome meal from the selection available.

Created using fresh, local ingredients, you can enjoy a dizzying array. If you are a savoury fan, the local crab meat sandwiches are renowned and the frittatas are especially popular too. For sweet-toothers, you can’t go wrong with the homemade scones dolloped high with jam and cream (in that order). Wash each mouthful down with a hot tea or refreshing soft drink and give into the explosion of tastes.  

If you are visiting the area with your family, rest assured all members of your clan are welcome – including your four-legged friends. Hugely popular, the café’s tables fill up quickly so make sure you bag yourself a spot before it’s too late. If you have special dietary requirements, let the helpful staff know and they will be all too happy to make sure you are well looked after.

Once you have finished your food, bask in the sunshine for a while before heading on your way. For a final stop, park on the beach at Porthallow and let your dog have a play in the water. The beach is dog-friendly year-round.
