Sat at the bottom of the steadily sloping Manor Street, Anchorstone Café is a welcome sight. Wander past traditional white-washed cottages and follow the views of the River Dart and backdrop of trees that unfurl as you reach the banks. Enjoying an elevated position, step onto the café’s wooden terrace and bask in the glorious scenes before choosing your favourite table.
Owned and run by proprietor Clare Harvey, her family and team, inside the Anchorstone Café has an immediately inviting atmosphere. Having undergone several facelifts and improvements since Clare took over nearly a decade ago, including a new dining room within the restaurant, the café boasts a newer, polished look whilst still keeping family values at its heart.
Open throughout the summer season, the café’s team make the most of its superb location in the South Hams and regularly fill their menu with locally-inspired choices. A fundamental theme to their dishes, the café enjoys excellent relationships with local suppliers so that the freshest ingredients and tastiest flavours can be harnessed.
Working with some of the best fishermen and farmers in the area, diners can enjoy a varied selection of favourites at Anchorstone Café, accompanied by an ever-changing specials board. Specialising in delicious seafood lunches, including fish and shellfish, look out for the Start Bay crab, Elberry Cove mussels, lobster salad and local hand-dived scallops.
Adding an extra special twist to your day out, the café now offers their very own Anchorstone Water Taxi service too. With Buddy at the helm (the son of Anchorstone Café’s chef and owner!), you can hop aboard ‘Little Pip’ boat and take advantage of the direct ferry service from Dittisham to Dartmouth. Following a weekly timetable, the first ferry departs from Dittisham pontoon at 9.45am and returns every hour!
