A traditional fishing town on the shore of Mount’s Bay, Newlyn is awash with rustic glamour, spattered with hotchpotch cottages and overlooking a working harbour sheltering fishing boats. Home to one of the largest fishing fleets in the UK, it is home to a bustling fish market where local restaurateurs and chefs stock up on the latest catch of the day. One such being the Mackerel Sky Seafood Bar.
A fantastic café, restaurant and bar serving the freshest seafood plucked straight from the surrounding Cornish waters, the Mackerel Sky Seafood Bar has become somewhat of a favourite amongst locals and visitors alike. Continuously receiving rapturous praise for their phenomenal fish and seafood dishes, it is one of those places that will stay with you long after you leave.
Located in Newlyn itself on New Road, the restaurant embodies true Cornish spirit; comfortable yet tastefully interjected with industrial undertones, nodding to the town’s heritage. If you can manage to bag one, a table by the window is a great spot, allowing great people-watching opportunities as you sip on a chilled white wine or hot drink and lap up the atmosphere.

Once you have familiarised yourself with the menu, choose from a varied medley of oeuvres popping with taste. Offering a number of tapas-style tasting plates and sides, you can mix together as many as you’d like for that perfect combination. For a classic choice, choose the moules marnieres or beer-battered local white fish, or for something a little more adventurous, opt for the scallops with warm chorizo or the home-made crab nachos with lime sour cream and zingy jalapeños.
When you have finished, there’s no other way to round off the experience than with a dessert. As fresh and clean tasting as the mains, the sweet treats on offer will be too hard to resist. One of the most popular choices, the Affogato special of espresso with sea salt caramel ice cream is a real crowd-pleaser.
Later, head for a walk around Newlyn and towards Penzance to take in breathtaking views of Mount’s Bay and watch fishing boats to and fro on the horizon.
If you would like to visit the Mackerel Sky Seafood Bar, lunch is served between 12 and 3pm and dinner is between 6 and 9pm. Hurry though, the restaurant does not accept bookings in advance.
