Concierge service

From the moment you arrive to a crackling fire, chilled Champagne and generous hamper to the moment you leave, the owners of Thornworthy Barn are on hand to make your stay truly perfect. Whether you would like shopping brought in for you so you don't have to worry about buying it en route, advice on the best walks and local pubs, they're happy to help. In addition, wax country coats, wellies, binoculars, brollies and Ordnance Survey maps will be left for you. If you have any requirements, just get in touch prior to your holiday to see how they can help.

Living

Take the stairs up to the open-plan sitting room where you'll find mellow wooden floors, a beamed, vaulted ceiling, French doors that open on to the terrace and a fabulous porthole window that has picture-perfect views over the moors. There are two sumptuous, bespoke sofas and a footstool all covered in Mulberry velvet nestled around the cosy wood burning stove, a Smart TV, Bose SoundTouch 10 sound system, full-length velvet curtains, ambient lighting and a radio too. You'd be hard-pushed to find a lovelier spot to relax in after a day out exploring the moors.

Eating

We just love the country-chic slate grey kitchen - we dream of cooking in here! There's a fabulous dual range cooker with a five-burner gas hob plus triple crown wok burner, as well as a Belfast sink, two fridges (one with a small freezer compartment), dishwasher, microwave, Nespresso coffee machine, Dualit worktop appliances and everything else you would need to rustle up a feast. The Georgian scullery work table in the centre of the room is the focal point of the kitchen, whilst we can imagine sitting in the window seat - preferably with a glass of our favourite tipple in our hand! You'll find the circular antique dining table with French-style dining chairs in the open-plan living area, beautifully lit by the Velux window above.

Sleeping and bathing

The stunning en suite bedroom is located on the ground floor. With a king size, teal-coloured velvet bed complete with French linen bedding, sheepskin heated blanket and a plethora of luxurious throws and cushions it's the ultimate romantic bedrooom. Carefully decorated in a collection of gorgeous antiques including a chandelier large chest of drawers, double wardrobe, Ralph Lauren fabric as well as beautifully chosen artwork, it's a joy to retire to at the end of the day. The en suite is totally divine too, with a roll top, freestanding bath with hand-held shower, beautiful tiled floor and striking dark coloured walls.

In addition, there is a second gorgeous bedroom should you need separate rooms which has an en suite shower room with huge walk in, six inch rose shower with additional hand-held shower.

Outdoor space

To the rear of the property, accessed through the sitting room, you'll find a lovely terrace area complete with a teak table, four chairs, Weber barbeque and a Kaddi bowl for a spot of alfresco dining. This leads on to a private garden which boasts outstanding views over the moors. In addition, there's access to a tennis court and croquet lawn (not for the professional!) whilst you can also wander to the kitchen garden for seasonal fruit, vegetables and herbs. There's also a stunning roundhouse with a wood burner, a perfect spot to curl up and watch the sun set over the moorland with a glass of something special in your hand.

Spa room

To make your stay extra special, there's a spa treatment room available for massage, reflexology, facial massage, hot stone massage and deep tissue massage on Saturdays or Thursdays. This can be booked prior to your stay - please let us know and we'll put you in touch with the owner.

We know how gorgeous our retreats are, but don’t just take our word for it – here’s what previous guests say about Thornworthy Barn:

You have more than fulfilled the promises which drew us to Thornworthy. Inside and out, this has been a haven of peace, comfort and delight, and above all, of warm hospitality. Thank you very much for all the thought and care you have devoted to making this a very special place. From watching the birds feed, to walking through the gardebs and over the moors, and the cosy comforts fireside, we have enjoyed every minute. We shall not forget the warmth of your welcome and the pleasantness of our daily exchanges.

We arrived at Thornworthy Barn after a long drive and were warmly welcomed by Robert and Lisa, our hosts, who are the loveliest people. We stayed for a week, and the barn was cosy and the beautifully designed interiors by Lisa were to die for! There was a very well stocked hamper, cake and goodies in the fridge to keep us going for a couple of days too (Thank you!). We had a fabulous week ,and, despite the rain we had an amazing time exploring Dartmoor , doing a lot of walking and of course having a giggle about our exploits every time we bumped into Robert. We will definitely return

Thornworthy was exceptional in every way! Location was perfect, views where breath taking and the hosts Lisa and Robert treated us like old friends. The interior was beautifully decorated, with attention to detail, a level of luxury that that made us feel special. Any review cannot match this incredable place and we look forward to experiencing it, all over again!

Fabulous location, accommodation and host(s). Perfect retreat, only wish we'd booked a longer break.

We had a 10 day stay in April, whilst the weather was a bit damp, the constantly changing view was fantastic as the clouds rolled in and out of the valley. The wood burner kept us nicely toasty, and we had the joy to see new born baby ducklings arrive during our stay. This was our second stay, Robert and Lisa are fantastic hosts are the place is a wonderfully calm retreat away from London.

This is beautiful retreat in a stunning location. Robert and Lisa are wonderful hosts and ensure that everything meets your expectations.

Absolutely incredible! The Thornworth Barn and its hosts have fully exceeded all our expectations.

Your home is nestled in an incredible part of the country and we feel privileged to have shared a part of your life. From your warm greeting, as hosts, to the amazingly decorated and designed cottage, the hamper filled with tempting goodies, filled fridge, and lit log burner - nothing was forgotten. Thanks for your advice on walks and places to eat. We have truly enjoyed our stay and look forward to returning!

Excellent standard of accommodation. Hosts were outstanding and there for anything we needed but otherwise left us to enjoy the wonderful house and garden.

Wow! Robert and Lisa, your effusive nature, generous, warm hearted hospitality, and helpful attitude are all factors that made us welcome. To feel at home, to feel realxed, to feel happy - that is certainly how we felt here - thank you for sharing your beautiful location and the extension of your grounds were much loved and appreciated. We loved the adorable and lovingly kept interiors. Everything was noticed esepecially the little special touches. We shall return to see you and all our lovely furry friends!

We loved our stay at Thornworthy, it made the most perfect base for exploring Dartmoor and the surrounding villages. The attention to detail in the cottage is second to none - everything so well thought through. We particularly enjoyed our evenings sitting by the fire pit barbequing our supper. Thank you Robert for also showing us all the best walks! A brilliant first visit to Dartmoor!

There is so much to love here, it's difficult to know where to make a start. The barn itself, with all its thoughtful details and luxuries, exceeded our expectations and the location is stunningly beautiful. Robert and Lisa are excellent hosts; we were given excellent advice about where to walk - the reservoir was a favourite - and where to eat. We enjoyed a meal in the brasserie at Castle Bovey and would recommend it for a delicious but casual meal in a beautiful location. Thank you Robert and Lisa, for a wonderful and relaxing stay.

The most relaxing long weekend we have ever had. Our hosts were absolutely lovely and nothing was too much for them. The standard of accommodation was first class and the cleanliness impeccable. Thank you!

We arrived at Thornworthy in the early evening. The wind was chilly, and we were tired from a day of travel. Robert and Lisa greeted us warmly and gave us a tour of our beautiful accommodations. The fire was lit, the champagne was on ice, and the moor was mere steps away. All of a sudden, it just felt.....magical. Lisa and Robert have seemingly, effortlessly blended the luxury and comfort of the Barn with the raw beauty of Dartmoor.

Thank you, Lisa and Robert, for this magical week.

What a few days drowning (almost literally!) in nostalgia. My parents lived here from 1957 - 67 and we were married from here in 1964 - do the arithmatic! It was wonderful to see the old house in such fantastic condition and the gardens so wonderful. My father was a keen gardener so he would have been delighted to see its present conditions. The alterations you have made are amazing - just think, I am writing this in what was our hay loft. As for the birds! Again your continuing to provide dozens of feeders would have delighted my mother and even more ducks. All we can say is your hospitality bowled us over, Roll on the next 58 years!

Really lovely and well thought out cottage. Excellent for walking. Take good boots and a warm/dry coat for the moors.

Fabulous luxurious retreat in the most peaceful setting.

If one is seeking a pleasant, relaxing retreat which is very well equipped with readily accessible interesting local walks and local produce, then this is the place. The owners (Robert and Lisa) are personable and helpful, always available if needed, yet maintaining the privacy distance - they have got it just right. First rate. An enjoyable break, thank you.

Absolutely exceptional property in a beautiful setting with generous hosts. Perfect retreat with excellent walks. Thornworthy Barn is gorgeously presented and very comfortable.

Absolutely divine destination, perfect for a couple looking for a dose of seclusion tucked away in the most tranquil setting.

Robert and Lisa go above and beyond, really joyous hosts who bring a really feel good factor to your stay. Can't wait to go back!

Perfect location to explore Dartmoor, with some lovely villages and local attractions. Retreat was was stylish and very comfortable, Rob and Lisa the hosts were superb in every way and super friendly. Nothing was too much effort. Welcome pack was very generous, we especially oved the limoncello and coffee cake!

We've had a really wonderful stay here this week - you have created a beautiful place to stay here at Thornworthy Barn and we've enjoyed every moment. It's been great to escape from the city to spend time in the countryside - thank you for your advice on places to walk to. It's also been so relaxing spending time in and around the cottage and in the grounds of your beautiful home. Thank you for making this such a memorable stay!

A wonderfully remote and beautiful rural retreat. We had a lovely honeymoon.

Excellent accommodation with the most helpful and friendly hosts. Thornworthy Barn would be the perfect choice whatever the weather: outstanding for walking and if the weather is awful, you couldn't ask for a more welcoming, comfortable and well furnished holiday with fantastic attention to detail. Faultless.

We absolutely loved our holiday. Robert and Lisa are wonderful hosts, so attentive and gave us great advice on nearby walks and pubs. The place is beautiful and there are so many places to sit and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the moors. Thank you for truly memorable stay.

Stunning property and great welcome.

Really lovely accommodation, better than photos. Beautifully furnished. Exceeded expectations. Amazing views and fabulous walking from the doorstep. Lots of delightful little touches - local ingredients for breakfast next day in the fridge. Fizz on ice on arrival. Robert made contact before we arrived. Robert and Lisa could not have been more welcoming and were happy for us to wander around their fabulous garden and give us tips on the local area.

This cottage is everything anyone could hope for in a luxury retreat. We can’t wait to return.

Simply breathtaking and the perfect getaway. Cannot wait to return.

Please don’t tell anyone else about Thornworthy - we want to keep it as our little secret. Barn Cottage is beautiful, we ate breakfast on the terrace in September and watched the sun set every night. Long walks across the moors, candle lit dinners and rabbit pie at the Warren Inn. We will be back ... provided nobody else has booked it first!

Fabulous property with incredible views , just perfect for a week of relaxation. Lisa and Robert are great hosts and provided a lovely welcome hamper and drinks

Robert and Lisa have perfectly captured the beauty of the moors at Thornworthy, creating a relaxed and lux environment that showcases the stunning countryside while making sure to incorporate every homely touch you could want. The grounds are beautiful -- we particularly enjoyed the swinging chairs overlooking the moors for our morning coffee and the outdoor fire put for wine and cheese in the evening. Lisa has thoughtfully decorated the barn and it shows in all the small touches including the sheepskins for outdoor furniture, the heated blankets for the evenings and the sumptuous hamper with local treats to be enjoyed throughout our stay. We will certainly be back.

'Thank you for creating this amazing space for people to come and escape on the moor. We're sad to be leaving as we've had such a special time. We love the cottage and all the special touches you've created, and we've also loved being outside and enjoying each of the different vistas from the various seating places.' - May 2021

'What a truly wonderful spot you have here at Thornworthy. We have had a fabulous week in Dartmoor despite some gloomy May weather - lovely evenings by the fire, drinks with a stunning view, the charcuterie board was absolutely delicious as was the generous hamper and breakfast you kindly left for us. Thank you for sharing this heavenly spot with us, we are recharged and ready to get back to reality - although, very much hope we'll be back soon! Take care and all the very best for staycations this summer and beyond!' - May 2021

'Honeymooning heaven in Devon! I'm a poet and you know it! Thank you.' - May 2021

'Thank you so much for sharing this truly breathtaking cottage and surroundings with us. All things being 'normal' we should have been on our honeymoon in the Maldives, however in our opinion the paradise you offer far exceeds. Your hospitality and attention to detail and little added extras are beyond expectations and make it all the 'moor' special. Special thanks to Robert for assisting us with the local walks as we would not have had the same experience without it. We love the place and you can assume we will be back!' - April 2021

'Thank you so much for the most wonderful week we could have imagined. This week should have been our wedding (postponed due to current events) and The Barn was the perfect replacement. We have loved the thoughtful attention to detail at every stage, admired both the gorgeous interiors and the incredible surroundings, and adored the itineries/recommendations for walks and places to see. We know we will be back again, and can't thank you enough for your generous hospitality' - November 2020

'Our second stay at Thornworthy and just as lovely as the first time! The owners have thought of everything - we arrived Halloween weekend and there was even a lovely hand-carved pumpkin to welcome us! Inside, the house was cosy warm with the woodburner flickering and the most amazing hamper we've ever seen was waiting for us to enjoy. We were lucky with the weather and managed two lovely walks over the moors and Fernworthy Resevior - in fact, we didn't use the car all weekend. The wonderful round house in the garden was a highlight too. Honestly you'd be hard-pressed to find a more perfect stay. Thank you so much!' - October 2020

'Thank you Lisa and Robert for your fantastic hospitality, we have absolutely loved our stay at your beautiful home from the moment we arrived we have felt totally relaxed and have been so impressed with the quality of everything that you have kindly provided at the property. The views are beautiful and we have really enjoyed the evenings by the firepits and round house. Listening to the owls - just perfect. We hope to return' - September 2020

'Thornworthy Barn was the first place we visited after six months at home during lockdown and it certainly exceeded expectations. As well as providing a welcome change of scene, we really benefitte from the isolation, peace and quiet in such lovely surroundings. Loved the birds and animals and the tranquility of the moor. We very much enjoyed the luxuries at the Barn too, and thank you for a very enjoyable week' - July 2020
