Sumptuous, cosy and welcoming are just a few of the words that describe this charming escape, ideal for couples. The Barn lies in the heart of Dartmoor close to Chagford on a beautiful estate dating back to 1840 that was once a hotel and the famous writer Mary Wesley, author of 'The Camomile Lawn' once lived here and there is reference to the house in her writing. Tucked away in a courtyard and beautifully restored, the interior designer owner has clearly taken time and effort to create a truly luxurious and romantic home stay that brings the heart and soul of Dartmoor inside, and we just love it. It's also a wonderful escape to unplug from busy lives and embrace the peace and tranquillity that this little piece of heaven offers, with nothing but open moorland all around.
Concierge service

From the moment you arrive to a crackling fire, chilled Champagne and generous hamper to the moment you leave, the owners of Thornworthy Barn are on hand to make your stay truly perfect. Whether you would like shopping brought in for you so you don't have to worry about buying it en route, advice on the best walks and local pubs, they're happy to help. In addition, wax country coats, wellies, binoculars, brollies and Ordnance Survey maps will be left for you. If you have any requirements, just get in touch prior to your holiday to see how they can help.

Living

Take the stairs up to the open-plan sitting room where you'll find mellow wooden floors, a beamed, vaulted ceiling, French doors that open on to the terrace and a fabulous porthole window that has picture-perfect views over the moors. There are two sumptuous, bespoke sofas and a footstool all covered in Mulberry velvet nestled around the cosy wood burning stove, a Smart TV, Bose SoundTouch 10 sound system, full-length velvet curtains, ambient lighting and a radio too. You'd be hard-pushed to find a lovelier spot to relax in after a day out exploring the moors.

Eating

We just love the country-chic slate grey kitchen - we dream of cooking in here! There's a fabulous dual range cooker with a five-burner gas hob plus triple crown wok burner, as well as a Belfast sink, two fridges (one with a small freezer compartment), dishwasher, microwave, Nespresso coffee machine, Dualit worktop appliances and everything else you would need to rustle up a feast. The Georgian scullery work table in the centre of the room is the focal point of the kitchen, whilst we can imagine sitting in the window seat - preferably with a glass of our favourite tipple in our hand! You'll find the circular antique dining table with French-style dining chairs in the open-plan living area, beautifully lit by the Velux window above.

Sleeping and bathing

There are two stunning en suite bedrooms located on the ground floor. Both bedrooms have king size velvet beds - one is in an opulent teal colour, the other a calming sage green, complete with French linen bedding, sheepskin heated blankets and a plethora of luxurious throws and cushions. Each room is carefully decorated in a collection of gorgeous antiques including chandeliers, stunning chests of drawers, double wardrobes, Ralph Lauren/Mulberry fabrics as well as beautifully chosen artwork, creating rooms which are just a joy to retire to at the end of the day. The en suites are totally divine too; the teal bedroom has an en suite with a roll top, freestanding bath with hand-held shower, beautiful tiled floor and striking dark coloured walls. The sage bedroom has en suite shower room with huge walk in, six inch rose shower with additional hand-held shower.

Outdoor space

To the rear of the property, accessed through the sitting room, you'll find a lovely terrace area complete with a teak table, four chairs, Weber barbeque and a Kaddi bowl for a spot of alfresco dining. This leads on to a private garden which boasts outstanding views over the moors. In addition, there's access to a tennis court and croquet lawn (not for the professional!) whilst you can also wander to the kitchen garden for seasonal fruit, vegetables and herbs. There's also a stunning roundhouse with a wood burner, a perfect spot to curl up and watch the sun set over the moorland with a glass of something special in your hand.
