Undercastle Cottage is found in the heart of the New Forest and is one of the most romantic locations in southern England. The cottage is approached down a long winding tree-canopied track where you will be met by ponies at the gate. Once through the gate the beauty of the oak framed cottage will be apparent with its thatched roof, rose clad exterior and magnificent views with gardens that gently roll down to the river's edge. The cottage has 1100 yards of fishing, lovingly attended herbaceous gardens and beautiful interiors. In addition to the main cottage there is also the Fishing Lodge.

While away your days fishing on the famous Hampshire Avon, soaking up the secluded peaceful atmosphere, taking long walks, horse riding or mountain biking in the forest. Spend relaxing afternoons in the hammock and later enjoy a candlelit dinner on one of the secluded terraces whilst watching the kingfishers fly by and then a glorious sunset.

Just two hours from London, Undercastle Cottage is perfect for both short and long stays.

Fishing

For the anglers amongst you, you'll love the half mile of exclusive private fishing available on the Hampshire Avon. Famed for its large Barbel, Chub, Pike, Trout and Roach, this is an opportunity not to be missed - just remember to pack your own rods! There's also a rowing boat available upon request. Coarse fishing is from 16th June until 14th March. Salmon and trout fishing is from 1st April until 30th September. There is no fishing from 15th March until 1st April.

Living

The double height oak framed living room is a truly spectacular space for relaxing in. A large red-brick open fire makes sure the room is cosy in winter, whilst the French doors open onto the terrace by the river allowing the interior of the cottage and nature to seamlessly merge. Two super-comfy sofas create optimum seating space and natural light floods in from the double aspect windows.

Eating

The gorgeous handmade kitchen and dining room are just perfect for entertaining, filled with everything you need to rustle up delicious meals for your loved ones, including an electric range cooker. The impressive round table lies next to the kitchen with views over the river whilst during the warmer months you can dine al fresco on the terrace - just perfect!

In addition, there's a utility room next to the kitchen complete with large fridge, freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer.

Sleeping

Sleep comes easily at this peaceful retreat, and you'll find three lovely bedrooms to retire to at the end of the day. Upstairs in the main house you'll find the pretty master bedroom with a vaulted beamed ceiling and dual-aspect windows - one facing over the river, the other over the forest so the best of both worlds! The sumptuous king-size antique iron bed is luxurious, so you'll easily drift off to sleep with the gentle babbling of the river and the "twit twoo" of the owls. Downstairs is an adorably cosy double bedroom with river views, whilst the separate fishing lodge offers twin beds with glorious river views - perfect for those seeking a little seclusion and ideal for the extended family.

Bathing

There's a family bathroom upstairs in the main house with a romantic freestanding roll top bath tub for two, whilst in the fishing lodge the ensuite is a shower room with facilities. There's an additional toilet downstairs in the main house.

Outdoor space

Set within three quarters of an acre of cottage gardens and surrounded by the New Forest, the outside space is about as idyllic and hidden away as you could wish for. Within the grounds are three ponds which overflow into the river, whilst to the front of the house is a sun soaked paved terrace complete with outside dining table and chairs, loungers and barbeque - just perfect for relaxing on, watching the river slide lazily by and the grassy heathland beyond. Nature lovers will enjoy the plethora of birdlife that visit, whilst you might also be lucky enough to spot an otter swim by.

Parking

There's plenty of private parking within the grounds of the property.

Babies and children

A travel cot and high chair can be provided on request. Please note that due to its waterside location children must always be supervised as the river and ponds are unfenced.

Dogs

Up to two dogs are very welcome. The garden is fenced on three sides, the riverside is obviously unfenced! Please note, there is an additional fee per dog, per week or short break.

WiFi

Undercastle Cottage is in an isolated "NotSpot" so this is the perfect retreat to purge yourself of the negativity of social media, clear your mind and truly relax with nature. But should you want a sneaky peak at your emails, there is good 4G reception at Undercastle Cottage so you can still use your data for the internet.

We know how gorgeous our retreats are, but don’t just take our word for it – here’s what previous guests say about Undercastle Cottage:

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. It truly is an exceptional location, you really feel completely away from it all. Even though we stayed in winter I wrapped up warm and spent hours sitting outside watching the birds and wildlife. The cottage itself is so cosy and has lovely homely touches. The pub nearby is fabulous, wonderful food and friendly staff. We didn’t want to come home and have booked to stay again twice next year!

The location on the river and the design of the cottage was something you only see in films, so spectacular and unique, one of a kind find.

A beautiful cottage set in the most wonderful position. We loved paddle boarding on the river and watching the sunsets whilst enjoying a glass of wine.

A quintessential English countryside cottage. Absolutely a delightful holiday!!!

Magical special place, we loved it, our dog loved it, caught some trout, saw kingfishers . Brilliant walks , shops and pubs nearby . But you will probably only want to hang out at undercastle and enjoy the view.

Overall we thought the cottage was delightful and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

We absolutely loved it. I spent a complete day just enjoying the river and wildlife with a fabulous bottle of wine and cheese and pate. The hamper was a very lovely touch. Thank you . We would certainly love to book again.

Chocolate box cottage, great location for a secluded getaway. Loved sitting out under cover of the fishing Lodge during the rain. Great for Long walks and pub lunches.

Beautiful. Well presented and fabulous location.

The drive up to the property was met with a glimpse through the trees of the perfect chocolate box picture of the most beautiful cottage by the river. Absolutely nothing I could fault about this property. Quiet, secluded peaceful piece of heaven. So comfortable and decor and little touches couldn’t be bettered. If I could describe my perfect home this would be it

It was amazing and lived up to all photos supplied.

One of the best properties we have stayed in. Amazing location and an amazing property. The owners truly care about the property - there is nothing they haven't thought of. The welcome hamper was also superb - full of personal touches.

Very relaxing and incredible location, we had glorious weather and so could enjoy the amazing views from the terrace.

This is a magical place which brings tears to the eyes when you first see it. We had amazing weather, and that allowed us to make use of the comfortable and pretty outside space. We feel as if we have been in a fairytale for the past week. If it’s solitude, with a touch of luxury, that you seek then this is the place to stay. I cannot recommend highly enough.

Truly idyllic haven of peace and tranquillity

A superb location !!! Fantastic cottage !!! Well equipped !!! Superb hamper ! We were very sad to leave but will defiantly return in the future!!!

A delightful cottage in a lovely position.

A beautiful property in a beautiful location. The interiors and comfort of guests are beyond some of the best hotels we have stayed in and the owner should, rightfully, be applauded for her sympathetic build/restoration of the original fisherman’s cottage.

Heavenly location, we will definitely be back!

We loved the cottage and the location it is in. We relaxed from the minute we got there. The welcome pack was very well thought out with lots of locals goodies which we thoroughly enjoyed. And best of all we could walk into the forest at any time and enjoy lots of lovely walks with our four legged friend.
On leaving we met the team who look after the cottage, can I add that they were such wonderful people and oozed Undercastle which to us was the icing on the cake.
We would dearly love to come back to the cottage in the near future.

Our family had a most amazing stay at Undercastle Cottage. I would highly recommend a staycation here as you can’t help but relax and unwind. Stunning surrounding countryside and an abundance of wildlife. Will definitely go back.

Great cottage & great location :) Welcome hamper was lovely!! Fishing was hard going due to the weed, but still fun. We will return !!!!

The pictures do not do this place justice - it's even more beautiful in real life - and so completely and utterly tranquil. We can't wait until we can book it again!

Fantastic spot to slow down and just enjoy the sights and sounds of nature with a glass of something nice..

dreams can come true here.

Unbelievably stunning cottage and location. We had our dogs with us and they were in heaven playing in the beautiful garden and taking the odd dip in the river.. The weather was kind to us but even if it hadn’t been we would still have had a wonderful time.

If you love nature & want to escape the hustle & bustle of everyday life, this is the place for you. The cottage is tastefully furnished & once inside all your cares seem to just melt away. The secluded grounds are beautiful & if you look hard, you will find all sorts of little wonders hiding. If you fancy a long walk, there is a fenced area in the forest where the dogs can run off lead within a short walk from the cottage. The autumn colours in October are stunning. During our stay we tried our luck at & fishing & managed to catch a 3Ib Brown Trout! (Which we did put back) The area is teeming with wildlife. Each morning the fluorescent blue Kingfisher would hover & take a dive to catch breakfast, followed downstream by the flocks of graceful swans. Early evening is the time to grab a blanket & sit outside the boathouse with a glass of something nice. You won’t be disappointed with the sunsets & on a clear night the stars will wow you. It truly is a wonderful place to stay... & yes, we have just booked again for next year!

Outstanding location and a beautiful property. A perfect get away from it all holiday but also close to many attractions. Walking distance to the village pub to boot!

Perfect 10 days in mid Jan, only sad we didn't book a fortnight! Lovely surprise of a superb quality and generous Hamper on arrival. Location perfect for dog walks from the door. Horse and Groom a must visit, the dog friendly bar regulars are great company. All in all a fantastic experience and am looking to book for the summer (we never stay at the same place twice). As for comfy beds, I have returned home and ordered the same mattress as the upstairs bedroom!! Highly recommend a stay here!!

Idilic location and would definitely recommend for a total relaxing vacation

a little gem! perfect for a quiet weekend or a longer stay to explore the fantastic new forest area.

A perfect detox in glorious surroundings. How lovely to find such an escape just 90 minutes from London.

'Outstanding location and a beautiful property. A perfect get away from it all holiday but also close to many attractions. Walking distance to the village pub to boot!' - July 2020

'It's been a real treat having been asked to join our kids on a four night stay here. The rain has poured down but that made it even more relaxing. Even though it was already cosy, we lit the open fire and sat back to watch the swans and ducks etc. I saw my first 'in the flesh' otter on the bank opposite the French doors. The cottage provided everything we needed and more besides. The dogs thought the grounds were a real bonus for them and the underfloor heating throughout the downstairs was a real soporific treat, especially for the old dog! The welcome hamper items went down really well. We hope that we get a chance to visit again - we'll have our fingers crossed for better weather so we can enjoy sitting out in the lovely outside spaces!' - February 2020
