Pull up to this beauty and you'll instantly fall in love: with a turret made for a princess, gorgeous windows with stained glass and oodles of character, you'll be forgiven for thinking you're in a medieval abode, rather than one built in the early 18th century. Part of the incredible Compton Castle on the Somerset/Dorset border, the lodge lies within the estate, but is privately contained from the main areas for security and your privacy. Please note that the grounds are private property. Lakes, woodland and gardens can be explored from the footpaths directly outside the entrance to Windsor Lodge whilst the views to the Glastonbury Tor and King Alfred's Tower at Stourhead are incredible. The lodge itself is a unique opportunity to stay within the estate and offers a warm welcome, immense privacy and is a characterful home stay complimented perfectly with the best of modern design and comforts.

Eating

Step into the entrance hall and you'll find the dining space, complete with antique table and eight chairs, pine Welsh dresser with vintage china and two further chairs and a coffee table - ideal for those seeking a quiet spot for a chat. Walk through the archway and you'll find the spacious kitchen, made for social dining with eye-catching wooden floors throughout and a chic white kitchen with quartz white worktops. Filled with everything a keen chef might need, including a stainless steel Rangemaster cooker and breakfast bar with sunshine-yellow chairs, it also includes all the love-to-have's, such as a Nespresso coffee machine for that all-important morning brew. Finished off with touches of lime, yellow and Orla Kiely, this is a fun, happy space in which to cook.

Living

Nestled in the turret next to the kitchen, the hexagonal country-chic living area is peaceful and calming in shades of duck egg blue and cream. Two sofas and two cosy chairs nestle around the cream wood-burning stove, making it an ideal spot to huddle away in during the winter months (Christmas here would be just fabulous), whilst it's a cool hideaway during the hottest of summer days. The Lambrequins are Swedish in design, and compliment the Hygge theme within the property, simple white roller blinds create a contemporary twist to the traditional look.

Sleeping

Take the stairs up and you'll find three beautiful bedrooms to choose from. The Master en suite bedroom has an impressive king size mahogany sleigh bed accompanied with beautiful antique furniture and stunning country views through eye-catching stained windows. The second bedroom is a lovely little country-style snug, with a sweet double bed and fitted wardrobe. A cosy hideaway just perfect for hunkering down. Whilst the incredible third bedroom lies within the turret with a stunning antique French king size bed - fit for royalty! Also, within the hexagonal room you'll find gorgeous antique furniture in keeping with the room. All the bedrooms come complete with Yves Delorme linens, Brinkhaus duvets and pillows and luxurious woollen throws - all you need to help you drift off into a deep sleep!

Bathing

The master bedroom has an en suite shower room and is a double glass wet room with large shower whilst there's also a family bathroom with bath and overhead shower - so there'll be no fights in the morning! Both have heated rails to keep towels warm and fluffy.

Outdoor space

To the back of the lodge you'll find a pretty garden complete with bench, table and chairs and a charcoal barbeque for alfresco meals. This is the perfect spot to kick off your shoes after a hard day's exploring, pour yourself your favourite tipple and enjoy the tranquillity that this little corner of paradise offers. The covered veranda is dry and great for sitting out in the rain with tea, smelling the plants and hearing the sound of falling water whilst remaining warm and dry! The table and chairs fit there comfortably too, for board games and outside meals together. Bunting and soft cushions on the bench help with enjoying the countryside celebratory feel. The outside boiler room has drying space for any wet gear or pushchairs, with an additional wine fridge and washing machine/drying rack.

Setting

Windsor Lodge enjoys a quiet, rural setting, within beautiful countryside - much loved by the people who live in it. Due to its peaceful location, we kindly ask our guests to maintain the tranquil setting to respect our neighbours' peace and privacy.

Please note, this retreat is not suitable for hen or stag parties.

Antiques and collectables

This stunning retreat is also home to a large collection of original, one-of-a-kind antiques including furniture, crystal, china and silverware. Whilst we know our guests always take the utmost care in our retreats, in the unlikely event that something gets broken, any breakages will need to be paid for – thank you.

Super eco friendly home

Windsor Lodge is striving to be as green as possible, as such they have a strict policy on recycling as well as composting all natural food waste. The owners also provide grind compostable coffee pods, organic toiletries, low energy appliances, logs from the estate and locally sourced charcoal to name just a few of their greener endeavours.

WiFi

Windsor Lodge has WiFi so if you need to stay in touch with the outside world you can.

Parking

Private gated parking is provided for two large or three smaller cars. There is a garage on the drive to store any surprise visitors!

We know how gorgeous our retreats are, but don’t just take our word for it – here’s what previous guests say about Windsor Lodge:

It was a charming retreat and an absolute pleasure to stay there. Thank you so much.

Better than home-from-home, this beautifully detailed retreat is instantly relaxing and very well appointed. We appreciated the keen eye for detail, the quality of many of the fittings and all the little extra, seasonal touches applied. Stunning location with direct access to footpaths and panoramic views from the kitchen and turret rooms. An easy walk from two excellent pubs (The Kings and Queens Arms respectively) and a mile from the very good Teals farm shop (although do venture to others as there are many to choose from). Enough to do and see in the immediate area even out of season and plenty of local cider to sample.

Fantastic stay in a beautiful lodge, situated in a wonderful location. Exceeded all of our expectations. Highly recommended.

Windsor Lodge is beautiful. The bedrooms and lounge were very comfortable. The kitchen was extremely well equipped. The gifts from the owners of chocolate, biscuits, eggs, milk and Champagne were an extremely generous and kind touch. We loved every minute of our time here and would thoroughly recommend a stay.

We can’t speak highly enough about our stay at Windsor Lodge. It’s a unique property which we found spotlessly clean, beautifully renovated and comfortably furnished. The garden is lovely and you can walk from the property to several pubs, though we wouldn’t recommend doing that after dark!

Great and unique accommodation in a lovely, private location. Well equipped and very comfortable - a great base from which to explore the surrounding areas. The nearest local is a 25 minute walk - you should take a torch if making the trip in the autumn/winter months in the evening. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and our dog loved the secure garden. Welcome basket went down a treat too!!

Loved the location, quiet and garden very private.Sherborne, Wells and Glastonbury are a short drive away. Lodge had everything you needed. My sisters and I had a fabulous week and the weather was glorious, so what more could you want. We even met the owners who were very friendly.

We had a great few days at Windsor Lodge. It was that something special for a special occasion and wonderful having all the family there.

Is was absolutely glorious and the perfect setting for a 60th birthday celebration.

An excellent place to stay with beautiful surroundings and views and country walks in every direction. Lots of really good places to eat within a 20 minute drive.

We spent a family week here over Easter and we could not recommend the cottage more highly. From arrival, the cottage was perfectly set up for us and the treats that were left for us by the owners made us feel very welcome and ensured our holiday started from the moment we arrived. The location is stunning, very quiet and perfect walks right from the door.

Fabulous stay, very relaxing.

A great cottage in a beautiful place, the contact with Boutique Retreats was very pleasant and they helped us well. We would definitely book here again in the future! Thank you for a great vacation!

Absolutley perfect weekend break with my family & their 2 puppies. To celebrate my 60th birthday. Everything was perfect exceeded expectations.

We were blown away by how fantastic this place was and the amazing staff that helped make our stay top class - thank you

A perfect cottage for our family holiday

A truly lovely property - beautifully decorated, fabulous kitchen, comfy snug & bedrooms. We really felt at home & our 3 year old loved that he was staying in a castle!

A stunning retreat, which looks like it has been sent from a fairytale whilst offering the most brilliantly organised kitchen. What more could you want!

Beautifully done cottage. Tastefully done with a good balance of modern conveniences and a good sprinkle of antiques. Susan and Bill were very generous hosts. The garden and cottage were very well maintained and easy to feel at home in. I would highly recommend this cottage.

A comfortable country retreat in a beautiful setting

The lodge was perfectly romantic and exceedingly beautiful. It was likening living in a fairytale.

We were pleased it was as described and very clean. The garden was ideal for our dog being fully enclosed. Beds etc. were very comfortable A lovely area for a holiday close to London.

We had a wonderful stay at Windsor Lodge. The lodge is beautifully and tastefully equipped leading to a hugely relaxing stay. Our children were particularly thrilled to be sleeping in a turret room. The surrounding countryside is beautiful too with interesting places to visit nearby. It was an incredibly special stay for us - thank you.

We would highly recommend our stay at Windsor Lodge. The location is great and the lodge exactly as advertised. The owners have taken great care with all the facilities and we were so sad to leave.

Windsor Lodge is adorable. Beautifully furnished, immaculately presented and fully kitted, this fairy-tale home was very welcoming and a haven after 6 months lockdown in London. Jane is very kind and welcoming and Mary, the cleaner, was very helpful and the house was spotlessly clean. The garden is joyful, even in early Autumn it is full of flowers and butterflies. The surrounding trees were majestic and watching the breeze blow through them was a delight. Immediately outside the gate are 2 good walks - it was so easy to enjoy the nature surrounding the house. The house is surrounded by fields. But as well as the birdsong and the clip-clop of horses hooves, there is also some noise from the farming activities. But this did not spoil our enjoyment of our break. We hope to return soon!

This was our second visit to Windsor Lodge and we enjoyed it just as much on our second visit, as we did on our first.

'I have visited The Lodge last 2years and have been overwhelmed by it's welcoming atmosphere. I can not recommend to those more wanting a more relaxing holiday in the countryside x' - November 2020

'Windsor Lodge is a bright and cheerful house. It is in a very quiet and peaceful location with lovely views. It is well equipped and beautifully maintained. The owners are very thoughtful and included some charming Christmas decorations.' - December 2019

This was our second visit to Windsor Lodge and we enjoyed it just as much on our second visit, as we did on our first.

'Beautifully clean and tastefully furnished. Totally enclosed garden a bonus, as our small dogs couldn’t escape. Lovely welcome hamper, and fresh flowers everywhere were a delight.' - March 2019

'This was a weekend trip with friends to celebrate my 40th birthday in style! And we certainly did, there was a bottle of bubbles on arrival and some delicious home made snacks waiting for us to start our trip. There was very heavy snow fall on the day of travel and the owners went out of their way to clear the road leading up to the property and the driveway so we had no problems. The house was exactly as the Boutique Retreats website had described and we all felt very relaxed and cosy without a care in the world for the whole long weekend. We would love to visit again perhaps in the Spring or Summer to see it in a different season. Thanks so much to you and to the owners for a truly enjoyable stay.' - March 2019

'Beautiful place and area. Great for dog walking!' - January 2019

'Our stay at Christmas in Windsor Lodge was a delight. The lodge looked so pretty with all the Christmas decorations and the tree. It was a joyous and memorable stay for us all and we adored our tour of the castle.' - January 2019

'The property is truly romantic, beautifully appointed, all those small details are really thought through. From the moment you arrive the place makes you feel like staying in the cosiest home ever. It is very convenient to travel from London by car or train (2 hours). The house and kitchen is equipped with everything you need for stress free holiday with children. We stayed with two small children for New Year celebrations and the experience of visiting a real castle was above and beyond any expectations. Our family had a really pleasant time, thanks to hospitality of the owners who were so kind to show us around!!!' - December 2018

'Thank you for helping to create some wonderful memories. Windsor Lodge is fabulous and beautiful! We would love to come and stay again' - November 2018

'It was a very quiet location and easy to access via your instructions. It was also very well located for a number of places to visit in all directions. Local towns were fascinating and Wells Cathedral was beautiful. It was a very comfortable house... and it was very well provisioned in the kitchen.' - October 2018
