Prawn on the Lawn in Padstow is a very cool independent London export. Billed as a fishmongers-come-restaurant, the concept began life in Islington, before expanding into a real harbour town on the North coast of Cornwall. Named after one of its dishes, Padstow’s Prawn on the Lawn is tucked away in the warren of streets in the hub of town. It is pretty trendy (think uber cool lighting and well thought out interior chicness) whilst offering exactly what you want (read oysters & prosecco – who needs more?).
The menu changes daily to reflect the change in the seasons and also the catch of the local fishermen.
Owned by the lovely Rick and equally yummy Katie Toogood, the concept is kept super simple. “We have a fresh fish counter for takeaways so you can cook at home, plus a seafood bar and restaurant where you can eat in. And what’s more, the mussels, oysters, lobsters and crab are all either grown or caught around Padstow. A combination of small and large sharing plates and platters – such as fruits de mer - ensure that any meal is not only delicious but super social and enjoyable and this is exactly what it is bring fish lovers in Padstow just meters from the harbour.”
This ethos of locally sourced doesn’t stop at the afore-mentioned molluscs and crustaceans. Katie & Rick work closely with the Padstow massive - local fishermen, oyster farmers, vegetable growers, micro-breweries and vineyards to ensure the produce is as Cornish as possible. The menu changes daily to reflect the change in the seasons and also the catch of the local fisherman. It is possibly the only place in town that you can rock up and gorge upon a platter of oysters washed down with fizz.
If you’re unsure what to go for start with the eponymous ‘Prawn on the Lawn’ (homemade soda bread topped with avocado mashed with lime juice, cooked prawns and a lime, lime, coriander dressing). Katie recommends the Padstow crab and lobster served hot with coriander butter or some super Scallop Ceviche with Chili, Coriander and Passionfruit.
Prawn on the Lawn sources all of its fish and shellfish from sustainable sources and is pleased to support the National Lobster Hatchery in Padstow and add a discretionary £1 donation to every restaurant bill to support its work.
