Stretching over seven miles, this is a lovely steam train ride for families or train lovers alike. Meandering through the gorgeous Devonian countryside, it's a laid-back way to take a glimpse at some magnificent scenery and explore some towns and villages along the way.
Built in 1872, the railway line runs along the pretty River Dart between Totnes and Buckfastleigh, via Staverton. Pick up the train at either end, spend a couple of hours wandering around and then head back - it's a great way to spend the day.
At the Buckfastleigh end you'll find bags of free parking, a museum, a play area and gift shop as well as riverside walks. There's also a miniature railway, a butterfly farm and otter sanctuary. At Totnes station, which has won awards, you'll find Totnes Rare Breeds farm right next door and it's just a short walk into the town. Staverton station is tiny and little-changed for over 100 years. Stop here for river walks and a walk to the village where you'll find a great pub and a 14th century church.
