Wookey Hole Caves, Somerset

Hidden deep in the southern edge of the Mendip Hills, the caves of Wookey Hole are England’s largest known web of caves open to the public and an extraordinary place to visit and find out about life underground. In turn it’s housed a paper mill, been a store for maturing Cheddar cheese and home to a witch – yes, really!

This incredible set of caves were the first to be explored back in the 1930s and although not yet fully explored, 25 chambers and over 4,000 meters of caves have been discovered, making them the largest show caves in England. There are plenty of caves to explore, from ‘The Great Hall’ – over 70 feet high – and the ‘Witch’s Parlour’ – the largest, natural underground dome in the UK and over 200 feet below ground.

There’s lots of activities to keep children entertained here as well as woodland walks, a restaurant, café and ice cream parlour, gift shop and more recently the re-introduction of maturing Cheddar cheese in the caves.
