A fabulous thirteen-and-a-half-mile journey through wild and rugged Snowdonia, reaching heights of 700 feet above sea level from the slate-quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog to the harbour at Porthmadog. With locomotives that are over 150 years old and their original carriages, this is a wonderful opportunity to experience what it was like during the golden age of rail.
The Ffestiniog Railway is over 200 years old, making it the world’s oldest narrow-gauge railway and is one of the most picturesque to be found in the UK, passing through fields and forests, snaking alongside mirror-like lakes and thunderous waterfalls, and clinging to the side of Snowdonia’s majestic mountains.
The beautiful trains and carriages have been lovingly cared for and offer comfy seating, at-seat buffet service and a fully-licensed bar. There’s two luxury Pullman carriages which offer a First Class service so you can travel in style and also a Pullman observation carriage for a unique viewing opportunity.
Parking is available at Porthmadog at £2 a day, and dogs are allowed in the 3rd Class carriages. For 1st Class seats, it’s worth booking in advance to guarantee a seat. Do check their website for more information on special events such as Victorian, Halloween and Santa trains.
